Chances for Data Science or Comp Sci

Hey guys,

I’m thinking about majoring in Data Science (Comp Sci as alternate). I know that the admissions for Engineering related majors are pretty high , but i’m wondering what my chances are with my current stats. I’m applying to all of the UCs except for UCB and UCLA.

Stats:
UC GPA: 3.76
–Strong upward trend (Fresh: 2.7, Soph: 3.6, Junior: 3.9)
SAT: 2030 (CR: 640, M: 700, W: 690) (Took it this weekend for the second time, seeing if it will be better)
ACT: 31 (S: 28, M: 30, R: 33, E: 32)

-National Merit Commended Scholar
-Varsity Track and Field for 2 Years (Soph and Junior)
-Co-Founder and Treasurer of the Computer Science Club at my high school
-Programming class at my local community college in the summer (A)
-Honors English in all years of high school
-Senior Year: AP Calc AB, AP Stat, AP Comp Sci
-Worked for past 2 summers at a university library
-In State student

1 major downside is that I didn’t take any AP classes junior year, so the ones i’m taking now are my first.

Any input would be greatly appreciated

Thanks!

I think your GPA is going to keep you out of UCI. Apply anyhow, as UC admission has some subjective elements and a compelling essay may just get you in.

UCSC and UCR are much more likely. I’d also encourage you to apply to SDSU.

Good luck

UCI is a Low Reach due to UC GPA. UCI likes those GPA’s of 4.0+ and will be more forgiving on lower test scores than visa versa. You need to have some good alternatives as suggested by @NCalRent.

Thank you for the input! Is there any other school you would recommend that is within my range? I’d like to stick with UCs for the most part but I am open to other options.

I would look at UCR/UCSC since they have reputable CS programs along with CSULB/SJSU and SDSU.
