What are my chances of getting into the honors college at UF?
I went to the Outstanding High School Scholars Program at UF last summer..
GPA UW: 4.0
GPA W:4.3
ACT: 28
SAT: 1280/1930
National Merit Commended Scholar
I have a good amount of extra curriculars, some I've been a part of since 7th grade, and 4+ leadership positions..

Your SAT and ACT aren’t high enough to get you an automatic invitation to apply. But don’t worry, you can petition. My son did qualify and he was invited to a “Weekend with Honors” or something like that that we attended. We sat in the room with a bunch of students and parents who asked lots of questions. Several students asked about how they can get into Honors if they didn’t meet the minimum requirement and hadn’t received an invitation. The Director told them they could still apply by petition (in fact quite a few of the kids taking us around for Honors weekend said they had got in on petition). The Director said what they needed to do was complete the Honors application and include an additional Haiku with their application. If the honors selection committee liked it (which comprises of the current honor students and the committee) they would then be put in the pool with the rest of the invited applicants and they would all be picked from there. At that point they wouldn’t know the difference between the invited and uninvited applicants. This is what she told us. So even though they say there is a minimum requirement that is easily overcome. My son had a 4.5 GPA a 2070 on the SAT, was on student government and had worked as a lifeguard during high school, etc. He did not get in. A piece of advice, if you really have your heart set on getting in, tell them what they want to hear. I remember my son writing about what he really loved, working on cars with his dad and at the time I told him I think they’ll want you to write something more along the lines of leadership or community service…but he didn’t, he answered the prompt completely truthfully. And a couple other things we learned along the way, the honors college has nothing to do with graduating with honors, you can still take honors classes even if you’re not in the honors college, you can still live in Hume even if you’re not in the honors college (they usually have extra rooms) and you are committed to taking additional classes you wouldn’t normally have to take if you get in. I have asked my son if he’ll reapply after his first semester, I think he’d have a great shot, all A’s involved in some great groups…but he’s no longer interested in it. My advice would be apply if you want but try not to be heartbroken if you don’t get in, once you’re there I think it will seem like much less of a big deal than it does now. Good luck! :)

Good luck to you! You’ll probably have to petition to get in but you should be fine. You need a 2100 SAT to auto qualify (at least it was). You do have to be in Honors to live at Hume.

Wow, I guess they raised the auto qualify to 2100? Last year when my son applied he hit it on the nose at 2070. The director told us that you didn’t have to be in honors to live in Hume. She said they have first choice of course but that if there are empty rooms (which she said there always are because not all honor students choose to live there) then non honors students can live there. I had called housing and asked about this in case my son still wanted to live there (he didn’t), they told me before move in if there were still empty Hume rooms you could transfer your contract there. Makes sense they would want to fill those room since they cost quite a bit more than the other dorm rooms. I wonder if they’ve changed since last year too?

The 2070 is right. But never have I heard that they open up Hume to non-Honors. If that’s true it would be a new scenario. Sorry if I’ve muddled the waters!

Failing to get into “Honors” is no big deal. Hume residence and 4 honors classes is about it. Honors light. I studied the matter with D. She elected to go elsewhere for college. I wouldn’t sweat it if you don’t get into UF Honors. UF is a solid flagship university. Enjoy!!

I definitely think you can get into the normal university, but I don’t think you will get into the honors, sorry; and that’s not a big deal. You’d be going to an amazing school. Worry instead about which dorm you want to choose ;)

Dflorida-
Although you did well academically in high school, your scores are just average
for those admitted to UF for the regular fall term for 2012. If you are looking for
an honest response….just concentrate on gaining admission into the school as a regular freshman…Even with your good scores, you are not 100 % …Try to improve your SAT score, you have one last shot Good Luck
