Chances for IU Business School?

Please note that I am currently taking the hardest course load possible.

I am a caucasian jewish male from Arizona.

I went to a day school (ranked number 1 day school in the Southwest) for 2 years of high school. Freshman and sophomore year. I was extremely unhappy there and my grades suffered as a result. All classes there are considered "honors", even though they are much harder.

Freshman Year: I took 6 classes. I received 2 Ds, 5 Cs, 3 Bs, and 2 As. Sophomore year, I took 6 classes first semester and then dropped advanced photography second semester due to an unfair teacher that harassed the male students. I received 4 Bs and 2 Cs first semester and 3 Bs and 2 Cs second semester.

I now switched to a public school where I am taking the IB Program. I currently have 3 As, 2 Bs, and 1 C. I can probably raise one of the Bs to an A and one of the Cs to a B. I received a 205 on my PSAT sophomore year, but I did not feel I did well this year. I was feeling horrible on the day I took it.

My extracurriculars include the following:
Freshman Year: Ultimate Frisbee Club (Every Friday), SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving), The Radical (Math Newspaper), B'nai Tzedek (Jewish Youth Philanthropy Organization with 200 kids.)
Sophomore Year: All of the clubs from Freshman year and I joined a Jewish Youth Organization called BBYO. I am now on the board for my chapter as the treasurer and secretary.
Junior Year: DECA (Business Organization. I am confident I can place top 3 in the state and do well at nationals. I am currently writing a 30 page international business plan), B'nai Tzedek (I am now on board for it and I was elected to the executive board as in charge of publicity), Invisible Children (I go on occassion. Not that involved.), Math Olympiad (I go on occassion. Not that involved.), Tutoring (For free.)
Senior Year: I will hopefully be doing the extracurriculars that I am currently doing along with National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. I couldn't join those this year because my GPA was not a 3.5. :/ I also plan to try to hold down a job or internship as well.

I have been taking practice SAT tests. I receive on average 750 on Math, 700 on Writing, and 580 on Reading (hate it.)

I really enjoy math and business, along with economics.

I’m not an expert on admissions to IU, but as far as being a DA (direct admit) to kelley I would say it would be a stretch.

Now, it’s not that big of deal. You can always apply to the business school after your freshman year. Honestly, there are very little benefits of being a DA…you take the same classes and you have the same exact requirements.

Not being a DA will actually probably help you as you are motivated to get good grades so you can get into the business school the next year.

The rules for business school admission can be found here:

[Future IU Freshmen: Admissions: Undergraduate Program: Kelley School of Business: Indiana University Bloomington](<a href=“Undergraduate | Bachelor's Degree in Business | Indiana Kelley”>Undergraduate | Bachelor's Degree in Business | Indiana Kelley)

Based upon what you described above, your SAT scores are good enough, but your grades are not good enough for direct admission. In fact, your grades are borderline for admission to Indiana University, but if you get the SAT score you expect, then I’m expecting you will be admitted.

As thlocke described above, the chance of your being accepted as a “standard” admit are still pretty good, and will depend upon meeting the requirements as described on the website I posted above.

Good luck.

Hmm 3 questions.

What is a direct admit verse a standard admit? I have never heard that terminology. I am only a junior.

Does IU look at freshman year?

Will my extracurriculars help me at all?

Direct admit means you are admitted to the School of Business (or Music, or COAS,etc) from day 1. Most freshman enter into the University Division and declare a major after so many credits/etc. in the COAS or apply to be admitted to another school.

Yes, they look at all 4 years. Of particular importance to IU is class rank. According to the common data set class rank and GPA are most important. Tests are a close 3rd. EC’s helping??? Only if you’re borderline. Keep in mind IU gets 10’s of thousands of apps a year. They have to streamline the process so things like letters or recommendation and EC are far less important to them. (FYI-they don’t require letters)

Work on improving your GPA this year–no C’s or lower.

I’m trying for direct admit to the business school for class of '13. I have to wait until semester though because they raised the minimum GPA and I only have a 3.5 now. My friend got in DA though and you CAN petition if you have the SAT score and not the GPA. You should seriously try for it. Kelley is such a geat school.

rrah, are you going to be class of '13 too?

Well, my D will be. I’m class of 19** and 19** . Just assume those ** are decades ago.

haha ok
then im guessing DanielD is '13?

It sounds like he’s a jr, not a senior.

ah, i just re-read it. he better really pull his stuff together then because each year they are raising the standards for IU and even more for Kelley

Apply to IU! If you play ultimate, Indiana has a great open team, the HoosierMama?s. A large porportion (in between 1/4 and 1/2) of the ultimate team is made up of caucasain jewish males majoring in business at kelley. If you aren’t a direct admit, the team holds study tables together once a week and we can definately help you get in. Both our captains are in the business honors program at kelley, one is getting his MBA and the other is getting his bachelors.

Quick question, I recieved my acceptance from indiana probably 3 weeks ago? How do I know if I’m a direct admit into Kelley? Thanks all for replying!

if you listed business as your intended major and you were accepted, it should say so in the website and you should recieve a seperate letter in a couple weeks.

Being accepted as a business major is not the same as being accepted DA (direct admit).

My son was accepted as a business major–and his acceptance listed him as:
University Division–Finance (meaning his planned major was Finance, but he was not yet admitted to the business school). He had to take the extra courses required during his freshman year, and then apply for admittance to the business school starting in the sophomore year (which he got).

If you are actually a DA admit, you will receive a separate letter approximately two weeks after the regular IU-B admission letter. This separate letter will be from the Kelley Business School telling you that you are a DA person.

Note that the major advantage in being a DA is that it is tough to meet the “standard” admission standards for the business school at IU-B. Approximately 600 students graduate from the business school each year–and it is estimated that 300 of these are DA students, and 300 are standard admission students. Yet that 300 who achieve standard admission come from an estimated 900 students who apply for standard admission status.

There is no application process for the DA students–it’s just automatic based upon high school GPA and SAT/ACT scores.

Calcruzer -
You bring up a great point about the difficulty of being admitted if not a Direct Admit. I am curious what the 600 rejectees do. Stay at IU? Go to other school? Seems like a lot of kids who will have to scramble and make some changes once rejected.

A lot of the people who don’t get into Kelley wind up in SPEA.
[School of Public Affairs and Environmental Affairs, IU Bloomington](http://www.spea.indiana.edu/home/)

I totally agree with bthomp1. Probably the largest number of them go into the public administration school, which is ranked as the second best one in the country (right after Harvard’s).

I presume the others go into some of the more popular non-business majors at the school–Communications, Journalism, Telecommunications, Mathematics, Sports Management (which is part of the Kinesiology major), Languages, Social Sciences or Labor Studies. About the only majors I expect they can’t easy switch over to would be Music, Theatre Arts, and Optometry.

Thank you both Bthomp1 and Calcruzer. Very helpful comments. It hits me that the SPEA, from my quick glance at the link provided, allows the kid that wants a management degree a chance to explore the liberal arts side a bit. Am wondering if kids that do well in SPEA get an MBA - perhaps at Kelley - at some point. I had no idea about this option. Really appreciate your help on this.

I really have no data on the number of SPEA graduates who go on to MBA programs at either IU-B or at other schools. I’m sure that if you contact the SPEA office they probably have some statistics on this, though.

Here’s the contact info:

[Public Affairs - School of Public Affairs and Environmental Sciences, IU Bloomington](http://www.iu.edu/~speaweb/public_affairs.php)

(it’s at the bottom of the webpage)

I’m guessing that if they do well at SPEA and score well on the GMAT and have had some good work experience, then they would have just as good a chance (or maybe better) than the people applying from other majors at IU-B–especially if they had indicated their interest in the business school as an undergraduate.

P.S. A quick correction to my comment above that IU-B was second only to Harvard among public administration programs. Actually, IU-B tied with Harvard, both schools finishing just behind Syracuse’s program. One well-known graduate from Syracuse’s public administration program is America’s new Vice-President-elect, Joe Biden.
