Chances for Me?

States like Ohio and Kentucky could also be called "mideast

Christen/Crickett, I don't want to argue with a 14 year old, but I am sorry, there is no way that Ohio and Kentucky are part of a region in the US called "mid east." Ohio is a state in the Midwest Region, and Kentucky is a state in the South.

And, if you had looked at Sarah's profile, you would have seen she is actually from Virginia, which is also a state in the South.

If you want to bite someone's head off when they come on the board for the first time, and admit in their post that they don't know much about the whole boarding school process, go ahead. It's a free country. Hope it works out well for you.

Whether or not it is geographically correct "mideast" was merely a term I used to convey a certain part of the U.S.

Apologies you do find the need to "bite my head off" as I apparetntly bit off Kilkee's.

Sorry, Kilkee. It was your 1st post and I'm sorry for jumping you.

I do live in Virginia :) I live about 3 and a half hours away from D.C. nellyrae- Kent's beautiful, and the atmosphere was very friendly. I loved it so much + I got to see the stables and everything! I haven't been to the Hill Campus, but it sounds like a wonderful school. Kilkee- A 96%? THAT'S A GREAT SCORE. School's will see each individual score. From reading in an old thread, I think that the school won't know how many times you took the SSAT but you will be identified as a "multiple test taker." I'm not sure if I'm correct though. Good Luck!!

kent sounds really cool! sara, have you taken your SSAT yet? i'm taking one in december. (and if any of you guys want to IM me, that would be great, i'm getting really bored) :)

I did take the SSAT, and I already received my score. I got in the 93rd percentile overall. Good luck on your SSAT in December, don't be nervous... Have you decided where you want to apply yet?

Wow, great score! I've been taking practice test and have been doing well, but you never know until you actually have the scrores. how hard did you think it was? Harder or easier then you expected? I'm applying to Andover, Exeter, St. Paul's, The hIll School and Loomis Chaffee. You?

I thought it wasn't that bad. It wasn't easier or harder than what I expected, just keep practicing, that helped me a lot. You'll do great. I'm applying to Kent, Taft, Deerfield, Exeter, Foxcroft, and I'm thinking about applying to Hotchkiss.

i was going to apply to taft until about an hour ago when me and my mom looked through everything again and decided on loomis chaffee. deerfield and hotchkiss were other ones i was thinking about but decided to go with loomis instead. what school do u most want to get in to?

ALL OF THEM! aha. I really want to get into Kent, but I would be perfectly happy at any of the other schools. What about you?

hmmmmmm.....it's more of a matter of FA. but if (best case senario) i got into every school with full scholarship, i would go see all the schools and then decided. i've only seen andover and exeter and between those two i would pick andover but i'm also really interest in st. pauls's so i might pick that one. but i would probably go with andover if i had the choice.

Both are good questions. Yes, as one poster noted, the answers are obvious...but, not really, once you get into the nuance.

Let's take the first question first: "Do the schools just look at the overall score or do they look at the breakdown?"

By breakdown, are you referring to the %ile scores for each section or are you referring to the number correct, number missed and number left blank. I don't think it's obvious that they get to see all that detail. Considering the schools and other services only report the overall %iles (unlike colleges that give you the median math and CR scores for their incoming classes), I can see where someone may doubt whether they even see the math/verbal/reading breakdowns. But the answer is, "Yes," they see it all. The %iles, the numbers missed/correct/blank for each section. The whole schmeer.

Also, on another level, your question asks whether they "look" at the breakdown. Obviously if it's provided to them then those numbers are hard to ignore. It would be a dumb question if you were asking if they see things that you understood were shown to them. But now that we've clarified just how much is shown to them, and that -- yes -- they see it, the question I assume you're raising as to "how" it's perceived is an excellent one. For instance, do you need to have an exceedingly high Math score to be competitive at Exeter, a school with a rep for attracting math whizzes? Wow. I don't know. Does anyone know? We talked about St. Paul's having a great rep in humanities. Do their applicants tend to score higher in the reading sections relative to the math sections? Again, I don't know. I don't think the data is out there -- which may be why you asked in the first place. I'm sorry I can't answer your question on that level. It's a great question and, now that you've raised the point, it's actually very intriguing.

The SSAT organization isn't much help either. They're intentionally vague as to the answer you seek, telling test-takers that you can contact the individual schools to ask them how they use your scores. Yeah, you can ask. But, first of all, will you be bold enough? And, if you are, will they give you as complete and forthcoming an answer as you hope for? Hard to say.

Your second question was: "Do the schools take into account that you only took the test once versus 2-3 times like some people."

The answers here vary and suggest, again, that it depends on the school. I think that's about right. There's no clear answer here either. But...and I'd like someone with direct knowledge to confirm or refute this...if you only elect to send one set of scores to a specific school, then I don't believe that they know that you've taken the test additional times. They definitely don't see those scores because, let's face it, the SSAT people are only going to forward those scores to the schools if you pay them cash money, right? And I don't think the SSAT even goes to the effort of sending messages to the schools indicating that this is the nth time you've taken the SSAT this year...nor do I think they follow-up to report to a school that you've taken the test subsequent to the administration that you paid to have forwarded to that school. Again, I'm not absolutely sure of the answer. It's a good question and I wonder if someone has some conclusive statement on that point to share here.

My first post... =]

Anyways. I just got my test scores. I was appalled by them. I knew I did bad because I had hypothermia (95 degrees actually) that day. I skipped school for half the week prior to the test to get better. I was confident I could do well because on all the practice tests I scored a near perfect. Took about 4 of them. I got-
Math (all 50 questions)- 0 wrong, 1, wrong, 0 wrong, 2 wrong,
Reading- Forgot but at most 7 wrong
Verbal- thought was my weakest part- btw 7 and 14 wrong.
I'm in 8th grade (male),That put me about 97-99% in math, 85-95% in verbal, and 93-95% in reading.

But i just got my scores back -!!! they suck!

Upper Level Score Range : 500-800

Verbal Score 746
(Personal Score Range: 725 - 767, SSAT Percentile 91%)

Math Score 761
(Personal Score Range: 740 - 782, SSAT Percentile 87%)

Reading Score 638
(Personal Score Range: 617 - 659, SSAT Percentile 42%)

Total Score 2145
(Personal Score Range: NA, SSAT Percentile 82%)

I'm so mad. I thought i did really good on the tests, but i guess not. I swear they mis graded my math because I would never get 7 wrong. I'm finished the math section nearly 10 min early and recheck every answer. How could I get 7 wrong?! and reading???!!!! I was sick what can i say?

I'm planing to retake the tests, but unfortunately the scores were already sent of to the schools. I scheduled my retake on Dec. 8th. However, How does the appalling scores influence the decision??? If i get 90% reading, 95% math, and 90% verbal, how would that influence the admissions?

My EC are great though: I participate in
-Math Olympiads- 4th-8th grade- got top scorer in school, gold pin top 97% of test takers & silver pin, and bronze
-Soccer- 3rd to 8th grade- starting sweeper, striker, captain of team when we went to Commissioner's Cup (playoffs for my league)
-Swim Team- 4th-8th grade- my best EC so far.-- Voted "most improved" first season, "MVP" second season, "High Point" last season. Got New England top ten honors in 7 different events, National YMCA top 16 fastest times in 1 event ( shoud've been two but coaches screwed up sending my times in) Record holder in 2 relays, and 7 events. Top swimmer in my age group on my team, Voted to join NATIONAL lane at age 12.
-Tutoring- I tutor students in 7th grade 30 min during school nearly everyday.

Grades.- High honors- A+ in every subject except english, just a plain A.
School Record holder- in 1 mile run, Push ups, starting football running back and corner back.
Advance- in MCAS- perfect on math scetion( another reason they mis graded!!!..lol)
Perfect conduct, never stayed after school for missing hw or discipline since 6th or 5th grade.

I'm applying to:(thinking of)
Code SchoolName
5758 Phillips Academy
5068 Middlesex School
3598 Groton School
5098 Milton Academy
6730 St. Mark's School
2770 Deerfield Academy
6460 St. George's School
6886 St. Paul's School
5764 Phillips Exeter Academy
4012 Hotchkiss School

What are my Chances?? I need financial Aid. My sis goes to St. Marks and is a star their- Kinda have a legacy their, that should higher my chances.

PS> crickett2324>
YOU swimming for WILTON!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love that place. I just went their last weekend. I love wilton, its the funnest (most fun- correct grammar) i go their every year, but unfortunately that was my last time EVER going their. i'm so sad, never will like any meet more than wilton. I did terrible this year, should've won 100 breast, but lost by 1 sec. I miss the place already, especially the hotel.. lol> manager yelled at me for wandering around and playing football in the hall ways.. I swim for Melrose Y sharks- the kid who can crack his elbows, 6 pack, - ever see me on deck?

hey hercules! sure, your SSAT's aren't the best, but your ec's are s outstanding i wouldn't be too worried if i were you. if you want to worry about someone, worry about MEm cuz there's no way i'm getting into these schools with competition like you out there!

I forgot...
1more EC- band, 4th grade to 7th,. invited a grade earlier to play with the middle school band. Played Clarinet in concert band. trumpet in Jazz band(1year)

Yes. I think I have a lot of good ECs, but My SSAT scores make me look bad. I mean that 42% in reading makes the schools look away. I wasn't born in the USA so my english isn't all that great, I work really hard in it, but its not my natural talent. My top choices are- Andover, Exeter, St. George's. Do you think i'll have trouble to get into only one of them??

iHerculez--

WAHH!! Were you at states for highschool division? Wilton Wahoos are the best!! What division are you? Senior I? Senior II?

My top choices are- Andover, Exeter, St. George's.

Well, the average SSAT for Andover is in the 90's I believe. Your ECs are outstanding so I think that should partially make up for that. I'm applying to st. George's as well. I think our scores are ok for that. I say "our" because I got 82% overall, as well :)

Haha. not in HS yet. i'm in the NATs lane... wilton wahoos are the best... favorite meet ever...actually the time i got 3 firsts at new england champs was better. but wilton is the funnest (most fun). I swim in Mass, so i wouldn't be in your division or league.

iHerculez: I swim in Mass, so i wouldn't be in your division or league.

Aww, dang! Haha, what does NAT stand for?? During the Y season we separate our teams by skill level. I'm on Senior II which is the 3rd best team out of 7, so I'm pretty content :)

Gosshh!! I can't wait to swim against you!! Are you a girl, though? My events are 50 free and 100 free. Sometimes a rare 100 breast.

St. georges is such a nice school. You hear bout their new infinity pool? off the hook. I surf there all summer in Newport RI, and i see the castle (school) every time. it's so pretty, the prettiest school i seen so far. The only problem with St. georges is that it might not be competitive enough. Their sports aren't the best and so aren't their acedemics. All above average though. One thing is that St. Mark's school has better food. lol. i go to st georges for lunch all the time in the summer for free and st mark's since my sis goes there

EC..
forgot, I play lacrosse starting midfielder, top scorer, take face offs, and in #1 ranked team in my league.

nah. not a girl...lol.plus your probably older than me, i'm only 13. I'm on the team (Melrose Y Sharks) with the blue caps and a outline of a shark on it, we were only in wilton last weekend for the invitational. We go there every year. NATs stands for nationals, thats my training group, actually Nats I, the better of that group, we're training for Nationals, hopefully i make it for winter nats..but wilton wins national every year doesn't it?. My events are 100 breast, then 200 breast, 200 IM (man, i miss doing 100 ims, their my favorite event ever), 400 im, then maybe, just maybe in the 100 fly and 200 free.
