Chances for me?

GPA: 3.519 UW, no weighted nor rank in our school

ACT: 32 Composite, Highest each: 36 Math, 35 Science, 34 English, 26 Reading (Didn't feel good in Reading section, taking another one in few weeks. Usually I get around 32~33 during practice).

SAT II's:
Math IC: 780
Math IIC: 800
(Taking Chem this weekend, around 700)

APs:
AP Calculus BC
AP Statistics
AP Computer Science
AP Micro (currently taking)

Our school doesn't offer much AP for the courses that I'm taking in; I have more requirement classes than some of the other students in our school, thus it is harder for me to fit in those AP courses.

Honors/Awards/Certificates:

CCNA 1 Certificate
Various Math Team awards
CompSci related awards
Golf Related awards
Dean's List
President's Volunteer Award, Bronze (government related)

EC:
AAST Math Team Captain
Varsity Golf 3 years, Captain
AltLaw (Project with Columbia University students, kept going until Google came up with something better)
CompSci Team
Battlebots

Internships/Works/Volunteer:
KAVC (Korean-American Voter's Council. We did various things to help out the Korean Community, including but not limited to passing one of the bills in House of Representatives about the Comfort Women issue).
Fairleigh Dickinson University (Working on autonomous Jeep project)
Korean School Volunteer as Teacher's Assistant
Working under Rutgers Professor to collect data for their classes
PGA Barclays Volunteer

Might as well as copy this from my resume:
Computer Skills
Java, C++, LISP, SQL Database, Microsoft Office, Sony Vegas Pro, Audio editing such as Audacity, GIMP, Networking, Http/Dreamweaver CS4, AutoCAD Inventor
(latter ones are all simple daily-use GUI programs (anything beyond office), but I listed them anyways)

Most of these were copied from my resume which I used to get an internship at FDU (listed above). Some of these are outdated and needs more work, others are pretty accurate.

My biggest concern is the GPA's. I don't know why, but I just do bad in classes (especially Junior year, but it was the time when someone passed away, and I took it very hard). I don't think my EC's/Awards are great either, which concerns me a lot.

Every classes that I take are either Honors or AP.

Lists of schools
MIT (I'm willing to waste money for this)
Columbia (For some reason, one of those professional 'college counselors' said I might have a chance)
Carnegie Mellon
Georgia Tech
UIllinois
UMich
NYU-Poly
LeHigh
Rutgers

P.S. as you can see above, I'm mostly looking for Computer Science/Computer Engineering schools.

MIT: High Reach
Columbia: High Reach
Carnegie Mellon: Low Reach
Georgia Tech: Low Reach/High Match
UIUC: Low Reach/High Match
University of Michigan: High Match
NYU-Poly: Match
Rutgers: Match

I think you have very strong SATIIs, course load, and ECs. However your ACT and GPA will hurt you in the long run when applying to schools like MIT and Columbia. Overall, apart from your GPA you are a great applicant. Just be sure to write awesome essays about your interest!

Best of luck!

Chance me back? : )

I can’t do anything about the GPA at this moment, but I know that I can do much better on ACTs (I don’t know why but I did the worst on Reading in last 3 months of prep).

Thanks!

I think if you emphasize your interest in Computer Science through your activities, then you should be good to go! Maybe you should try retaking the ACT to score above 34+.

Best of luck again!

Yup. I just love doing computer science and math related work, which is something that I want to do in both college and in real world. My essay (ones that I have written on) is related mostly to Math, due to the fact that I’ve had too many personal feelings and experiences with the subject.

btw, chancing yours at the moment hehe.

Thanks!

MIT (I’m willing to waste money for this)-mayb if you demonstrate a passion-reach
Columbia (For some reason, one of those professional ‘college counselors’ said I might have a chance)-high reach
Carnegie Mellon-high match
Georgia Tech-prob. in
UIllinois-in
UMich-in
NYU-Poly-in
LeHigh- high match
Rutgers- in

i’d say georgia tech is your best bet

can you define ‘best bet’?

Bumping because I need to make EA decision

The ivies are a bit of a reach. The other schools I see you getting into. Your ecs are pretty good and your standardized test scores are pretty good as well! Write really good essays and have good teacher recs! You’ll be fine! Best of luck (:

Bump: Need to decide if I’m going to spend time working for MIT EA or submitting one at regular decision.

out of all the schools I’d think Columbia would care the most about gpa, which would be to your disadvantage. I think Carnegie and U Mich may be on your level with MIT being your ultimate reach. You have great EC that are targeted to your major which is great. tech schools would probably look more at this and excuse your gpa. (which is still good btw. just not Ivy status.) and your test scores/coursework are great too. I think you have a really good list of schools to apply to, good luck!

Thanks, will chance in a second.

MIT. High reach.
Columbia. High reach.
Carnegie Mellon. Match/low reach.
Georgia Tech. High Match.
UIllinois. Match.
UMich. High Match.
NYU-Poly. Match.
LeHigh. Match.
Rutgers. Match.

“My biggest concern is the GPA’s. I don’t know why, but I just do bad in classes (especially Junior year, but it was the time when someone passed away, and I took it very hard). I don’t think my EC’s/Awards are great either, which concerns me a lot.”

I’m very sorry for your loss, and I don’t know if I’m being insensitive about this…but you can definitely explain what happened through your college essay, so they’ll take that into consideration when they review your junior year grades.

As for your college chances, I would have to agree with the person right above me.
And Rutgers, if you’re an in-state student, is certainly a high match.

I disagree. Rutgers is definitely a match/ low match. It should be one of your safeties.

In-State should make it an almost guaranteed safety, yes?

Bump (not doing EA/ED, want to be chanced again)

I think you have great chances at most of those schools. Gpa is low, but act looks good especially in math/science. Lots of ECs and computer skills are cool. MIT and similar elite schools might still be a reach however

Another bump

Will chance back when I can
