Chances for Syracuse?

Hi, How are my chances at Syracuse?

GPA- UW-3.55
School doesnt weight

Course load: 4 AP's, 1 honors ( school only offers 2) 3 years of French ( school only offers 3 years) 3 years of advanced science ( skipped freshman science) and 4 years of math ( pre calc is highest level)

Test scores- act 21 worst part of my application, and i hate that i did so horribly. I am taking the SAT in January so hopefully i have better luck with that.

EC'S 3 years of tennis- 2 years of varsity- 2 trips to the district tournament- 1 year captain-play year round outside of school.

2 years national honor society- 1 year officer

3 years leadership ( very involved with the school)

Over 100 hours community service

exchange program in France ( Only 12 days long, but wrote a very good essay about it that i will be sending.)

have been with the same small group ( religious group) for about 7 years. We are very close and do a lot of things together, including many service projects and other community orientated things.

Senior year classes : AP Lit, AP World History, Pre Calc, French 3, TA ( work with elementary school kids) leadership, ceramics.

Also can anyone give me information about syracuse? Student life, how social are students? Clubs and activities? Dorms, how is the city of Syracuse? or any other information?
Thanks!!

What school are you applying to?

You really need to get that test score up regardless. I’d say you’re probably in A+S, but you don’t stand a chance at Newhouse without a 30+ ACT or 1250+ SAT.

visit the school before you apply

I’d say without a SAT and a 21 ACT your not going to make it into Arts and Science or ANY other college within the university. Take the SAT and apply with those scores, NOT with the ACT 21. And this talk about being able to get into A and S but not Newhouse is completely off. The University has across the board standards. College of A and S is not some type of dumping ground for students that don’t meet the qualifications for other colleges within the university.

Trust me, A+S is pretty awful. Maybe it’s my Newhouse/Whitman elitism talking here, but it’s so much easier to get into A+S.

If Syracuse didn’t have strong schools besides A+S, it would barely be a first tier institution.

VF are you a current student there, if so, will you elaborate why it is so awful A+S? My sister is applying to A+S, and she visited, she loved it there, so I am curious. Thanks

Awful wasn’t the right term to use. It just isn’t selective at all.

I’d say A+S alone has around a 70% acceptance rate if it is 55% university-wide.

In Newhouse, you find kids with 1350+ SAT and 3.8+ GPA that turned down Notre Dame, UNC-Chapel Hill, etc. to come to Newhouse. At Whitman, slightly lower stats but still competitive. Architecture and Maxwell also boast strong programs.

There are some really great, smart kids in A+S. But there are also a lot of very average students. Compared to Newhouse’s student body, the student body at A+S just can’t compare. A+S has a lot of great programs, but it’s huge, so not every program is great.

A+S for about 25% of students I’d say is a dumping ground for students trying to eventually transfer to Newhouse, Whitman, Maxwell, etc. who didn’t have the stats coming out of HS to make it directly into that school.

Hopefully that clears up my comments and answers your question!
