Hi,
I’ve been bothered by a couple of my grades recently and I was just wondering what my chances are of getting into the University of Cincinnati. I am currently a Sophomore. Last year, my GPA was a 3.82 on a 4.0 unweighted scale. This year, however, I am taking 1 AP course (US History) and 1 Honors Course (English II). I received a D+ in English, only because I completely failed a test the second quarter. My grade dropped from an 84% to a 43%. I was however able to get that quarter grade up to a 63%. My final grade for the semester was a 68.5%. I do plan to retake this semester of this course and receive at least a 90%. In US History, I got a C-, a 69.9%. I was stupid. I don’t know what a was doing here. (This quarter I have an 82, so I have improved). In Biology I received B. I was very unhappy with this because it’s such an easy class but my teacher is so bad and gives all these coloring assignments that are graded. These influence my grade, not representing my true acquisition of the content knowledge. In Algebra II, I got a B+ because I screwed up the last quiz we had. Geometry and German - both A’s. My current cumulative GPA is a 3.52. My goal is a 3.65 for this semester. I am on the varsity swim team for school and plan to be for all 4 years. I’m also a lifeguard for the city and plan to do that as well for all years. This has been a very bad year for me so far, but the first part of this semester is looking somewhat better. Thoughts? Anything is greatly appreciated. Thanks
What major are thinking about? My impression is that some majors are more competitive than others for admissions.
Thank you…
Majors I am thinking about are…mechanical, petroleum or industrial engineering. I know that grade of a B+ in Algebra 2 does not look so good for engineering but it’s just because the day I had that last test I had something to do for History that sucked up all my time. I am not usually very good in English or History anyways, but these I know are not as important when looking at one of the three types of engineering mentioned above. Usually I have A’s in maths and Sciences. I hardly ever struggle with those. Next year I am taking AP Physics, precalculus Chemistry. If I get all As and A-s in all of my classes next year, including Physics, Chem and precalculus, then how might that turn out?
@19shepard_matthew It’s too soon to tell, but I’d encourage you to apply. Next year is a good chance to work on grades, rigorous classes. This summer do some test prep. Take a look at something called the common data set for UC. I’ve pasted a link, or google it. You can see information about admitted students in previous years, including test scores and gpa data. Also you might look at data on the ASEE website, for more specific data on engineering. Engineering, DAAP, and the UC conservatory (music) appear to be the most competitive for admissions.
Thank you for your reply
UC undergrad isn’t too difficult to get into, so you should be fine as long as your recs essays, etc are solid
