Chances for UCLA, USC, NYU, MIT?

I'm a junior in high school and I'm hoping to get into one of the colleges in the title. I am from Connecticut, so I think getting in UCLA would be hard since I am from out of state.

Here are my stats:

My stats are:
4.2 GPA weighted
Have not taken SAT or ACT yet (taking SAT in May, ACT in June), but current score in my SAT prep class is 1780 (pretty low but I'm work on it)

16 rank in class, part of top tenth

ECS:
Tennis (Year 9 and 10)
Student government (Year 9,10,11)
100+ hours of community service
Tutoring

More of the prominent classes I am taking this year:
Americans Studies I (a UCONN college credit credit class offered at my high school, it is a combination of history and English, 7 UCONN credits)
AP Chem

Prominent classes I am planning on taking senior year
American Studies II (a continuation of AS I)
AP Psychology
Honors Physics
Statistics (Another UCONN college credit class)

I am aware I don't have a lot of EC's but I hope to work on them over the summer.

For UCLA, I am hoping to get into the DMA (Design/Media Arts) program. For the rest of the schools, they don't offer any programs regarding web development/graphic design or something along the field, as far as I know. If they do, please let me know! But I am looking into those schools because they have a good rep and are in a good location.

I am also struggling between going into more of an art field like the DMA program or a more stable and well paying field like computer science.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

USC’s web development program: <a href=“Web Development - USC Viterbi | Information Technology Program”>http://itp.usc.edu/specializations/Web-Development/</a></p>

NYU’s digital communication and media (you can specialize) http://www.scps.nyu.edu/academics/departments/mcghee/undergraduate/bs-digital-communications-and-media.html</a></p>

MIT media arts and science program: <a href=“Welcome! < MIT”>Welcome! < MIT;

You should probably try to apply for UCLA’s DMA Summer Institute or try to get some internship at a web design place.

100+ hours community service is meaningless unless it was served in 1 MAYBE 2 places.

@Mlolo98 90 or so of those hours came from one place, I volunteered at an Aquarium Summer camp. The other ones are some events I helped at at school.

You should have said so :wink: Also, your unweighted GPA would help tons!

@Mlolo98
:(( I wish I had it too. I asked my counselor for it and she said she only sees my weighted GPA, not my unweighted… But most of grades are around a A/B+ range if that helps :-?

Here I’ll figure it out: how many B’s have you ever gotten (-/+ doesn’t make a diff, at least for the UCs). If you got a B first semester, AND second semester, count that as two. If you’re on the quarter system, count each quarter separately.
This is really important. Once you respond I’ll be able to gauge fairly well

@Mlolo98
We go by quarter system, so each B I mention is a B for that quarter. 4 total B’s for Junior year so far, but only 2 quarters have gone by so far. 4 B’s for sophomore year as well. and No B’s in freshmen year.

So that’s not too bad at all!
To be honest, you don’t really seem like an MIT student… I’m not trying to be rude (it really isn’t a bad thing), just making an observation.
That being said, I think UCLA, USC, and NYU are all attainable. To have a shot, I’d go for a 30+ on the ACT :). To be a bit safer maybe a 32. To be EVEN SAFER YET, a 34. So basically 30-36 and you should be good! Just figure out what you want to study, because that can really open up many new options.

@Mlolo98 By “you don’t seem like an MIT student” do you mean as in my grades aren’t good enough? (Be honest if that’s what you mean I won’t be offended). Or that it doesn’t seem like I would fit into their school because it concentrates on technology? Or a combination of both? Be honest please I am here to accept criticism and improve
:smiley:

Getting into the DMA program of UCLA would be my dream. But it’s a public school so they have accept most kids from California, do you think I will have a lower chance of getting in since I’m from out of state?

What should I aim for for the SATs? And are my Ec’s good enough? I feel like I need a lot more since I see people write lists of all their national awards and stuff and I have barely nothing.

Art is where my heart is, I like design. But it’s just the job security and pay I am concerned about. 8-|

Not your grades. It’s your EC’s that show your interests, and to be honest the style of your words that kind of signal to me that you’re not that kind of a person. I could be wrong, and it certainly isn’t criticism!

For the DMA, your creative portfolio is really important! If you can compose an impressive portfolio and fulfill the DMA supplement, you will have a shot. I don’t think OOS will hurt, as the OOS rate is higher at UCLA.

WELL, you can take ACT or SAT. Maybe since you’re scoring pretty lowly on the SAT, give the ACT a shot? I did that an my score shot up!

Your EC’s are okay, but you certainly don’t need national awards. Do you feel that what you’re doing is already a lot for you to handle? If so, don’t add more just to better your chances. Do what you have time for.

You dont really have anything that sets you apart, everyone has done most of those things. ECs are not very good, plus i think they care more for UW, i may be wrong, from Canada so i dont know what GPA is, jus going off of every1 else.

Try getting some ECs that show ur passion, and be a leader, found clubs and what not.
Chance me:

@manas1997 @Mlolo98

Ahhh confliction!!! One of you say I might have a chance and the other says I don’t. :(( The only EC at my school that has art is art club, which is basically inactive and rarely has meetings. I’m really shy so I’m not really a leader. :-??

@chickennuggets – UCLA, while they look holistically, it’s more about grades and test cores, along with the essay.
USC, too, while is a selective school is not Harvard. You don’t need to be SPECTACULAR with perfect scores just to be considered, and likely waitlisted.

Don’t believe me? Go to the UCLA and USC pages here on college confidential to read the stats of those accepted this year!
