Chances for UofM, Indiana (low gpa, good test scores)

I found out that I had been calculating my UMICH GPA
much higher than it was.
(I was calculating it with classes like economics and orchestra)
It helped my GPA some semesters, but hurt it more than not. (By quite a bit)
However, my ACT score came out to higher than what I was aiming for.

I decided to narrow my colleges down to Umich, Mich State and Indiana (<- thanks Alexandre, never knew about Indiana)

Instate

SCHOOL: Ross Preferred Admit

I know that I definitely won't get in (LSA is a reach as it is) but I heard it helps as it shows high interest

GPA: ~3.67 weighted, 3.32 Umich GPA with huge jump in grades
(3.0 range to a 3.9)
I got so scared when I recalculated my Umich GPA the "right" way :(

ACT: 34, 35 projected

I took 4 proctored practice tests and got a 31, 33, 35, 34 so I'm hoping for the best

EC's: (Just the significant ones)
-5 Leadership positions in clubs
(newspaper, student council, BPA, Math Club, Church)
-10+ Nationally Recognized Rifelry Ranks
-2 National Level Business Competition Awards
-3 State Level Business Competition Awards
-10+ Regional Level Business Competition Awards
-3 Regional Level Orchestra Awards
-Varsity Sport
-Internship at a Business

RECS: Two excellent recommendations (they dropped major "hints")
One excellent recommendation from UofM Professor (family friend)
Excellent Counselor recommendation (again, "hints")

TIME: I plan to apply late August (ie: Extremely early)

I'm putting a lot of time into this application. Basically, its all or nothing for me,
as I think Mich State can be considered a safety for me, so I'm making this
the best app I can possibly send.

Although I'm still a junior, I finished my essays (proofing them a billion times before sending) and talked to my counselor and my teachers to "coordinate" so my app will be completed late August.

I'm praying that the quality of my app/EC's/Test/time sent will push me just over the edge.

UofM: ?
Deferred + 3.9 midterm = Eventual acceptance: ?
Indiana: ?

Chances just for UofM (regular, after deferred) would be appreciated. (in percentages please, as the terms "reach, match, and safety"
are hard to define for me)

Thanks

Come back when you get a real ACT score....

it will generally be easier to gauge chances

You can get a full ride at Indiana. And they have a dawg garn GOOD business school (better than State). I'd also say that their campus and overall campus life is better than State's.

http://www.kelley.iu.edu/ugrad/scholars/

Also check out the Wells Scholars, if you don't want business (you may change your mind)

http://www.indiana.edu/~wsp/

Again, that's a full ride scholarship.

Indiana is a safety, and you will get a guaranteed 28K scholarship (7K per year), at minimum. I don't know your class rank, but if it's top 5%, check out the Mitte Scholarship too.

Anyways, you could go there for free, and really, it's a teriffic backup plan. I got deferred from UM with a 3.3 UM GPA, accepted very quickly to State, and accepted with scholarship to IU.

I guess that testing day was my day.

I got a 2310 on the SAT's.

I hope to do as well on the ACT's come april.

The statistic that scares me the most (but not unexpected) is the fact that 85% incoming freshman have above a 3.5. This puts me in the lower 15th percentile.

so.......Updated chances?

btw, thanks for the helpful information a2wolves.

anyone else?

With your 3.3Mich GPA, you're probably much below 15th percentile. Probably most of that 15th percentile with under a 3.5 has a 3.4. But, your scores are VERY high for them, and will hopefully pull you in. My prediction is that you'll get deferred and then get in. Apply early to increase your chances.

Would this be a "special circumstance?"

I don't know if I should add this into my app. The thing is, my trend is like this : 3.0, 3.4, 2.8, 3.9

The 2.8 is the semester that my good friend commited suicide. It was a trying time for me.
I don't know if I should add it/explain it in my app/essay......

Badkarma sorry about that I have a similar situation, I had my sister's attempted suicide and my friends suicide but Im not sure how/if I should address it.

It's a reason for your downward trend in an otherwise rising GPA. Definitely address it, any valid reason for a low GPA will do nothing but help you in admissions.
