Low gpa, good test scores enough for michigan?

I found out that I had been calculating my UMICH GPA
much higher than it was.
(I was calculating it with classes like economics and orchestra)
It helped my GPA some semesters, but hurt it more than not. (By quite a bit)
However, my ACT score came out to higher than what I was aiming for.

Instate

SCHOOL: Ross Preferred Admit

I know that I definitely won't get in (LSA is a reach as it is) but I heard it helps as it shows high interest

GPA: ~3.67 weighted, 3.32 Umich GPA with huge jump in grades
(3.0 range to a 3.9)
I got so scared when I recalculated my Umich GPA the "right" way

ACT: 34, 35 projected
I took 4 proctored practice tests and got a 31, 33, 35, 34 so I'm hoping for the best

EC's: (Just the significant ones)
-5 Leadership positions in clubs
(newspaper, student council, BPA, Math Club, Church)
-10+ Nationally Recognized Rifelry Ranks
-2 National Level Business Competition Awards
-3 State Level Business Competition Awards
-10+ Regional Level Business Competition Awards
-3 Regional Level Orchestra Awards
-Varsity Sport
-Internship at a Business

RECS: Two excellent recommendations (they dropped major "hints")
One excellent recommendation from UofM Professor (family friend)
Excellent Counselor recommendation (again, "hints")

TIME: I plan to apply late August (ie: Extremely early)

I'm putting a lot of time into this application. Basically, its all or nothing for me,
as I think Mich State can be considered a safety for me, so I'm making this
the best app I can possibly send.

Although I'm still a junior, I finished my essays (proofing them a billion times before sending) and talked to my counselor and my teachers to "coordinate" so my app will be completed late August.

I'm praying that the quality of my app/EC's/Test/time sent will push me just over the edge.

UofM: ?
Deferred + 3.9 midterm = Eventual acceptance: ?

Chances just for UofM would be appreciated. (in percentages please, as the terms "reach, match, and safety" are hard to define for me)

Thanks

I thought Econ counts as social science. Be sure to drop your freshman year and all the +/-'s.

with huge jump in grades (3.0 range to a 3.9)

[/quote]

So you improved from a 3.0(soph) to a 3.9(junior)? The upward trend should help.

How rigorous is your curriculum?

^
Very strong.

I take all AC/AP classes with the exception of orchestra and
math, and I take an independant study course in business

Yea, I the upward trend was 3.0 - 3.9, and I did double check without freshman year.

I like your chances for LSA, as long as you can keep up your grades in your senior year.

I had a really low UM GPA.... my regular uw GPA was 3.7, but I got a 33 on the ACT applied in dec. and got my admissions letter a few weeks ago. I think you're fine

Thanks

Its a horrible feeling having to rethink all college plans/etc. after calculating

a gpa. I can't believe I was calculating it wrong all this time.

Red, if you don't mind me asking, what was your Mich GPA?

Thanks

I had a UMich gpa around 3.2 but got in with a high SAT and strong senior year

^ that gives me some hope

I know it gets more competitive each year, but if what I hear is true about uofm trying to become more selective....

anyone else?

I realize I fall into the lower 15% of applicants....however, michigan is my dream school so...

Badkarma, I'd say you have a good shot at LS&A because they're quite kind in admitting kids with the low GPA/high test score combo. You might have to consider Ross a reach with your GPA simply because Ross is aiming to compete with Wharton in quality of admitted undergrads.

I heard ross is "ultraselective"

Two kids from my school got in already
3.9, 32 ACT
3.9, >30 ACT

So i'm def. not looking at ross at the moment.

I emailed UM about the bridge program, and if you get into the bridge program you ARE automatically accepted into UM. You just have to pay like, an extra years worth of tuition or something.

If not, i've been researching safeties, but if I don't have a solid shot at LSA, I might try to get into the bridge program.

I don't know. Do you guys think I have a solid shot?
I know it sounds stupid but CC is basically my guidance counselor. The one I have at school is a poor excuse.
