In-state female, Korean/African-American. 3.99 GPA unweighted with 27 ACT (32 E, 28 M, 24 R, 25 S, 10 essay). I've taken 5 honors classes and 8 APs by the time I graduate (AP World History, AP U.S. History, AP Chemistry, AP Language, AP Lit, AP Calculus AB, AP Physics 1, AP Government) which are all the AP's my school offers, well not including AP art haha. Class rank is 11/404 (even though I don't think UW pays attention to class rank.) I've only gotten one A-, in one semester of AP chemistry my junior year.
Extracurriculars: Junior Class VP, Senior Class Public Relations officer, Freshman/New student orientation leader for 2 years, National Honor Society treasurer, Varsity cheerleading for 3 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters mentor at Boys and Girls Club junior and senior year.
For my personal statement, I wrote about how being biracial means taking pride in both ethnicities and resisting stereotypes, since people often assume I'm only asian and they make judgements based off of that.
For my short response I wrote about cultural difference and how diversity goes beyond skin colors and includes accepting other's viewpoints as well (I wrote about a specific experience)
I'm really nervous because I know UW has more of a holistic approach. It's my first choice and it would be a win-win for me since it'd also be affordable as opposed to Seattle U (I also come from a 1 income household of about $60,000-$70,000). I always hear horror stories of valedictorians who don't get in haha. Some tips would be nice too, I'm not submitting my app until this weekend. Anyways, thank you :) oh and BTW, if I self report 2 ACT scores, do I have to officially send both? My other ACT scores are BARELY different (27 C, 32 E, 27 M, 23 R, 25 W, 10 essay) but I felt like I needed to include scores other than my most recent ones.

You should be fine!
It would be nice to have a more competitive ACT score, but what’s done is done.
Do not worry about the next person, focus on what you can do to put yourself ahead of them, and in order to do that, you must utilize the personal statement the best way that you can.
Tell UW what you can contribute, why you want to go there, your aspirations, etc.
Yes, you should send an official report of both your test scores!
UW was my first choice out of HS as well, but I was sadly denied.
If you don’t happen to get into UW this time around, do not give up.
I almost attended WWU after being denied from UW, but my heart was so adamant on going to UW; therefore, I attended a local CC for 5 quarters (including summer) and was recently accepted to UW Seattle for the Winter 2015 term.
Good luck!

I too am Korean haha!

I always feel like my ACT score holds me back haha thank you so much! Aw, congrats on your acceptance, hard work really pays off @UWchancemeh by the way I have a stupid question, on the income question (from tax returns) when it asks for most recent and previous year, would I put 2013 for both? Or do I do 2013 for most recent and 2012 for previous year?

Oh and yay for being korean! hahaha. I Applied to WWU but I’d rather be an hour away rather than three, so I’m trying to stick with schools in Seattle, the struggle

@goblazers

I submitted the same number for both because it was the most recent year completed and the previous year as well.
You should contact UW via E-Mail and ask.
They didn’t seem to have an issue with my application, but better safe than sorry!
Don’t worry too much, you’ll most likely get in.
Remember, your personal statement can make it or break it for you. Make sure you’re 100% satisfied and I highly recommend having someone that you don’t know read it. That way you get a different perspective.
I agree, that’s another reason I didn’t go to WWU

I’m just going to put 2013 for both then, makes sense. Thanks! @UWchancemeh

I just saw the other half of your comment, should I just go to a library and find someone random to read it? Hahaha I was thinking about doing that. I’ve had 2 teachers revise it already and I don’t know if I’m 100% on my personal statement… I know I’m 100% satisfied with my short response. @UWchancemeh

I had someone on here read mine, and I did the same in return.
If you’re having trouble finding someone and you don’t mind me reading it, I’ll be glad to read your personal statement. I’ll send the one I used on my application if you want a general idea of what UW “may” be looking for. I should warn you that our prompts may be a little different.
