Chances for WUSTL ED, Cornell, etc.

Hey guys, I'm currently a junior. It'd be nice if you could chance me on some schools I'll most likely be applying to next fall. I won't bother making you chance me for HYPS because well... yeah. I will be majoring in something biology related for pre-med.

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): Have not taken, but if I do, will most likely be around 2200 +/- 50 (dunno if I should take or not)
ACT: 34 (36 E, 36 M, 33 R, 29 S) - I screwed up on Science b/c I was tired, will DEFINITELY get 35 Composite when I retake
SAT II: 790 Math II, Will take Biology E
UW GPA (Weighted): 3.75 (4.4)

Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 1.5%
Freshman APs: Calc BC (5), World History (self studied, 4)
Sophomore APs: Euro History (5), Stats (5), Physics B (4), Human Geo (5), Micro (5)
Junior APs: Art History, French, US History, Macroeconomics, Lang and Comp, Comp Govt, Biology (expecting to get 5's on all except Art hist and French)
Senior Year Course Load (expected): AP Physics C, AP Lit, AP US Govt, AP Enviro, AP Chem, AP Psych, AP Comp Sci
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Presidents Volunteer Service Award Bronze medal, National Merit Commended (don't know yet, but pretty sure i barely missed state cutoff for semi-finalist so yeah)

Subjective:
Extracurriculars: Soccer (Freshman, sophomore, and JV teams - will prolly make Varsity next year), Tennis (2 years JV), Quiz Bowl (3 years), Science Olympiad (3 Years- lots of awards at state/regional level), Science Bowl (3 years), Part of KMO team (now discontinued, but part of team that won state), Math Team (3 Years), Volunteering Club (3 Years), Founded Chess Club at my school, Varsity Ping Pong
Job/Work Experience: None
Volunteer/Community service: 100+ hours at local hospital, will have over 200 when I apply
Summer Activities: Summer Club Soccer (3 years), Applied to WUSTL summer scholars
Recommendations and Essays: Will be decent

Other
School Type: Large, Pretty competitive, Public
Ethnicity: Won't help
Income Bracket: Won't help
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None

Reflection
Strengths: Plenty of APs, ACT score should be pretty good as well (I was consistently scoring 35s on practice tests!)
Weaknesses: UW GPA, Lack of leadership, quantity over quality

Chance me for:
Wash U in St. Louis (Early Decision) - 1st Choice b/c of strong premed, great dorms/food, high quality of life, doesn't seem to be very cutthroat (at least comparatively)
Cornell
Brown
Dartmouth
Northwestern
UC Berkeley
UPenn
U of Michigan Ann Arbor
U Minnesota / UW Madison (Both in-state)

Good news is that I think I still have time to improve my app. I've applied to various well-known math camps for this upcoming summer, and I think that if I get into one it'll definitely improve my chances. Also, I think I've found a mentor to do research with at a local university.

Thanks guys!

For WUSTL ED, there is a very strong chance that you will get in.

@spuding102, thanks for the chance. What would you say about the other schools?

I would say Berkeley is a safe bet, U of Michigan Ann Arbor is a match, U Minnesota / UW Madison (Both in-state) are safeties, Northwestern is a match, and the ivies are all probably reaches (except maybe cornell). Ethnicity has a big pull on ivy admissions.

For madison you are absolutely fine. My friend got in there with a 26 ACT, no extra curriculars, and like a 3.6/

Wash U in St. Louis (Early Decision) - low reach
Brown-low reach
Dartmouth-low reach
Northwestern-low reach
UC Berkeley-high match/low reach
UPenn-reach
U of Michigan Ann Arbor-high match
U Minnesota / UW Madison (Both in-state)- safety

Cornell- Waitlist
Brown- Rejected
Dartmouth - Rejected
Northwestern -Waitlist
UC Berkeley- Accepted
UPenn- Waitlist
U of Michigan Ann Arbor -Accepted
U Minnesota / UW Madison (Both in-state)- Accepted

@BrianIchen, what about WUSTL ED?

Wash U in St. Louis ED- match
Cornell- high match
Brown- high match
Dartmouth- high match
Northwestern- high match
UC Berkeley- match/low match
UPenn- high match/low reach
U of Michigan Ann Arbor- match
U Minnesota / UW Madison (Both in-state)- safetys
Your success in so many AP’s is outstanding; the only thing I would say is to show more leadership by narrowing down all of your activities and focusing more attention on becoming VP or president of other clubs. Kudos

Thanks man. Believe me, I’ve tried becoming captain for various clubs that I’ve shown much dedication to- things just never panned out. I’ll keep trying though. Good luck with your apps!

Also, do you guys think it’d be worth my time to apply to HYPS? Looking through some of these threads is intimidating; so many exceptional kids are denied. I don’t want to pour hours into essays and the rest of my app just to get rejected. If I were to apply to one of those schools early, then I’d have to apply to Wash U regular decision (where I’m assuming makes my chances lower). It would be terrible to not be able to get in early at say Yale and also get rejected at Wash U RD.

Bumppppppp

math is a really good field. Go to a school offering diverse opportunities for students interested in mathematics. you can always combine it with physics if you want. also; it is probably “unwise” to study anything relevant to statistics. you can help so many people via “applied” psychology. for instance; do humans “think” emotions OR do “emotions” think them?? maybe; you could connect such “philosophical” connotations w/ our preexisting “reality” … just some “questions” to consider. you “should” probably do the "research yourself.

Wash U in St. Louis (Early Decision) - Match, but WUSTL has seen a dramatic increase in apps so who knows
Cornell- High Match
Brown- High Match
Dartmouth- High Match
Northwestern - Match
UC Berkeley - High Match
UPenn - Low Reach
U of Michigan Ann Arbor - Match
U Minnesota / UW Madison (Both in-state) - I don’t know but prob safety

Taking Physic B then C is awkward, due to the overlap of content in the class which might be viewed as bad by admissions officers. Your UW GPA is low for most of those schools, but you have taken what like 18 APs so that’s a wash. But IMO, quality is more important than quantity. If you wanted to do a pre-med track in college why take all these humanities classes and rather focus on the sciences?

@phantombrain, i’m sorry but I didn’t really want suggestions for a major

@artiesoneleg1, AP Physics C is going to be new at my school next year. I never thought we’d get that class in the 4 years I would be at the high school, so I took Physics B. Also, I don’t understand why it would be a problem to be taking college-level humanities classes (if I hadn’t I’m sure above posters would have changed their predictions for reaches/matches). Are you saying that my time should instead have been spent on science extracurriculars?

WUSTL ED: High Match. 26.6% ED Rate Class of 2017
Cornell: low reach
Brown: LR-Reach
Dartmouth: LR-Reach
Northwestern: LR-Reach
UC Berkeley: High match
UPenn: LR-Reach

Your UW GPA is low, so you probably could’ve got it higher by focusing on science classes a little more, since that’s what you want to do in college.

I suppose you’re right, but I’m sure my Weighted GPA would be lower as well. There’s definitely pros and cons for each route. I went with taking the AP Social Studies/English classes because I think they’d be more rewarding then the regular classes (where a ton of busy work is handed out). If that means a UW GPA decrease of .1 or .2, then so be it.

Any more chances? Bumpp

Gpa is looked at in the context of your school. If a 3.75/4.4 gpa is enough for top 2perc then you’re good

Yeah, rank at my school is based on weighted GPA. I’m not sure how 3.75 would be though. A lot of kids at my school get good grades, but they take easy classes.
