Chances! Looking to Transfer.

Alright, so, here it is. I'm a Hispanic female from California that is currently attending a small liberal arts college in Maine (Colby College). I'm entering my Sophomore year and looking to apply for the Spring semester. I guess my one stab-you-in-the-eye flaw academically is that mathematics is the bane of my existance. I'm also not really aware how much the extra-curriculars I participated in high school are really going to count anymore but... I'll list them anyways I guess? Heh.

Oh, and I'm an English major.

GPA: 4.01 (High School, W) ;; 3.01 (Colby)

SAT: 550 M ;; 710 W (12 Essay/63 MC) ;; 670 V

SAT II: 510 (Math 2C) ;; 720 (Literature) ;; 770 (Spanish)

My high school was affiliated with the state university in our city; it's located on the university campus, so, in other words... it's a charter school. So, I took courses at that university as part of both my high school curriculum as well as for state college credit. They were our APs, so to speak, since there were so few actual APs offered.

I consider this a pretty average profile for a student (and my current GPA is short of horrendous) - but maybe a killer essay could help? EH? -cringe-

i don't know how to rank transfers, but i have a random question... if you're so bad at math why did you choose to take the SAT II!!! and on top of it, why did you choose the level 2 math!? lol just curious

Hahaha. Good question -____-. I think it was one I couldn't get out of taking? Or I was encouraged and under the impression that if I spent a massive amount of hours studying things could possibly go better xD. Gag.

I hate to tell you this but it is going to be quite a reach as it is, I have only seen one transfer get in with less than a 3.5 cumulative GPA, and that was a few years ago on an applicant from Stanford. While Colby is a great school, I don't know if it or the essay will be enough to overcome the 3.0.

Just as big as the GPA for transferring is having the right classes. I am not sure if you have compared your course load to what ND recommends, but if not I would check that out and try to get into as many of the courses as you can, but especially the Math and the Science as they look at those requirements more than the others.

Lastly, I have to warn you that ND doesn't accept many transfers mid-year just because there isn't as much time for them to adjust to ND. I am not saying you shouldn't apply, but your chances would be much better after next year.

I don't mean to be so negative, I hate that, but you have some work to do. You can make it happen, I had a C in Calculus my first semester of college. If you have any questions check out my website at (for a short while longer) www.nd.edu/~mnadorff/transfer or feel free to get in touch. It still can happen, I don't mean to say it can't, but you have to get the right classes and get the grades up. Good luck!

Thanks so much! All of what you said is extremely helpful and that website is an excellent resource =). It looks like I'll definitely have to step up my game x_x.

Dietz,

As irish68178 mentioned, you'll most likely need 12 hours (4 courses) of study in math and science (2 of each). I suggest loading up on those courses this year, crushing all your classes, and applying for Fall '08.
