Chances + looking transfer advice

Hi everyone,

For a long time, I struggled to find an area of interest I could see myself pursuing beyond college. My first two years at UCI I was an English major until I withdrew and attended CC to really explore my options. (GPA there was 3.95). That said, I was taking mainly studio art classes my first year at CC until finally, this semester I discovered a genuine interest in business admin. I’m applying to various colleges throughout California, but I’m most interested in attending USC.

I realize my chances are slim considering how competitive their bus admin program is, and the only thing I have going for me is a 4.0 GPA and the extracurricular art classes I’ve taken throughout the year. However, I’ve completed most of their GEs and am currently taking the recommended calculus course.

I’m considering staying at CC for another year to continue taking the relevant bus admin classes as well as to add internship + volunteer opportunities I’m interested in this upcoming spring semester. Is there any advice anyone would recommend to make me a more competitive applicant? I’ve visited numerous college transfer counselors for this purpose, but they were reluctant to give me specific advice.

Thank you for reading,
Charlotte

No one can give you specific advice for admission to USC because none of us are on the admission team there. You could try speaking with the transfer admissions office there and ask whether you have a chance or not.

What were your grades like at UCI?

I had a 3.95 GPA at UCI and took classes that contributed towards graduating as an English major. No extracurriculars besides instructional art lessons outside of class.

Thank you for the recommendation to speak to the transfer admissions office; I already consulted with a USC admissions officer and he gave me the advice to take some specific classes which I am currently enrolled in this semester.

Your strong point is the fact that you have done well both at UCI as well as the CC you are currently attending. If you take the recommended classes for a transfer student and keep your grades high you should have an excellent chance at admission to USC but just to make sure, have a backup plan in place with another school.

Thank you for the feedback. My transfer counselors have said something along those lines to me, but I cannot help but wonder what disqualified me from transferring from UCI with those grades. Maybe because I didn’t have all of my GEs completed at the time?
