Hello, I remember last year I got an invitation to apply to Tulane University; they said that it will automatically consideration for scholarship etc. I’m very interested in applying to this school because I like New Orleans. Since Tulane is one of the Southern Ivy League Schools I wonder if I can get in? I just submitted my application about 2-3wks ago. My GPA is right now is “ok” it is 3.81 (with 1 withdrawal) and I’m a part of Phi Theta Kappa and International Dean’s List Society. I wonder if 1 withdrawal will affect my chance of getting accepted into Tulane and getting some sort of scholarship? Please let me know and tell me your experience, because I’m feeling apprehensive right now. It means a lot.
One W means nothing, it happens all the time. Especially with freshmen. Your chances look good I think, although your high school record will still be reviewed. Tulane has a $20K scholarship for some transfer students, and of course you are eligible for need based aid. Good luck!
My hs gpa is pretty crappy though it’s about 3.35
Then I think it really depends on a lot of specifics, like where you went to school this year and how well the courses you have taken reflect, in Tulane’s opinion, your ability to do the work at Tulane. In other words how challenging they seem to be. No one on here will be able to give you a very good opinion on your chances given how many factors there are. @lexusnguyen95
does enroll a foreign language class is mandatory for every transfer student admission? If so, I’ve taken 2 years of Latin in my highs chool year will that be ok?
I am not sure what you are asking but Tulane can tell you what their foreign language expectations are.
also, another thing that I would like to add is that on the “Why Tulane?” essay while I’ve read some of the other posts about it. Other people tend to write more than 500 words while I just keep it short. Overall summary, of my statement I put the reason why I’m interested in TU because they have a beautiful campus and one of the Southern Ivy League School. However, my two most important reason is that I got an invitation to apply and the other reason is that I want to move out of state and live on my own without my parents beside me and be independent because it is (living on my own) is something that is not in my comfort zone. By that, I want to get into Tulane to become strong, independent and can overcome any obstacle. Moral of the story do think “Why Tulane?” essay is bad? Will it screw up my chances of getting into Tulane?
I’m sorry I’m feeling very apprehensive…
sorry for the confusion, I haven’t got the chance to take any foreign class while I’m at my college right now, but I’ve taken 2 years of Latin in HS. So for the foreign language requirement do you have to take a foreign language requirement class in college or highschool or both?
Tulane requires taking some foreign language while at Tulane. I forget if it is one or two semesters.
I am not very excited about what you described regarding your essay. The only thing that sounded personal was wanting to become more independent, but you could potentially go to dozens, even hundreds of other schools and achieve that part of your goal. You clearly have looked into Tulane and read a lot about it. Think more about what it is that makes you think you will grow as a student and a person there, that makes it a really good place for you. It doesn’t have to be something(s) that is/are totally unique to Tulane, but it should be more than it is far enough from where you live now.
can I resubmit another essay? Because I’m doing one right now
Sure. Just send it to your admissions person.
You have to take a foreign language to a certain proficiency level. (above the 2030 course level) For some people it might be two semesters, others it may be more based on your starting point. You are asked to fill out a language placement survey before you register and will be given the level you need to start at.
Well can take the foreign language class at Tulane? What I’m worried is if I haven’t take any foreign class at community college will it affect my chance?
I don’t know if it will have any bearing on your acceptance. You can choose among so many languages. Some students continue with languages they have had previous classes in, others start over with a new language. Here are the Tulane admission criteria http://admission.tulane.edu/apply/instructions/requirements.php
There are different criteria for transfer and international students. You should check with your admissions rep to clarify what is applicable to your situation
Just checked my Gibson Portal page! It said I got admitted to TULANE!!! I’m so happy… There’s no word to describe me how happy I am!!! WHOO-HOO!!!
Congratulations, @lexusnguyen95!
Thanks! Do you think they will give me any scholarship? Because on the invitation email they mentioned automatic consideration for scholarships. I really hope they will though @fallenchemist
It is certainly possible. Generally I have seen people with your kind of record get the $20,000 scholarship that is available to transfer students. But of course I cannot see your entire record, and that is JMO anyway. Who knows what Tulane might decide.
Should I ask them? Idk because I feel that it’s quite an sensitive topic. @fallenchemist
You shouldn’t have to ask, as they say you are automatically considered. Having said that, I also see nothing wrong with sending a note to the admissions person in charge of transfers that says something like “I just wanted to confirm that there is nothing I need to do to demonstrate interest in the scholarships that are available to transfer students. I would hate to think I missed submitting something required in order to be eligible. Thanks for your help”. That is quite reasonable.
