My sister attends Cornell so would that be a slight advantage? Even a little bit? Please gve feedback!

I think you have a decent shot. However, your relatively low GPA, slightly low SAT, and lack of ECs will hurt you. On the bright side, if your essays show your interest for their hospitality program (ie. write about your experience at Crowne Plaza) – this will definitely be a plus! Do you have any other ECs which may show this? Maybe your trip to Mexico?

Also, I don’t know the benefits of having a sibling attend Cornell in terms of legacy. It definitely wont hurt if you put it down.

Overall, I would say it is a slight reach, but certainly a good chance.

You are in the ballpark. Write a passionate essay about how Cornell is going to help you achieve your goals. Your internship is important. Work hard and make the best of it. Do not be surprised or dejected if you are deferred to RD. Or even if you are waitlisted. You are the sort of student they want. Good luck.

It all depends on your essay & interview. Getting in ED to hotel is difficult, because they only take approx 45 students. Hopefully your app will come across strong.

Regarding your sibling- there’s no way to indicate that, unless you want to mention it in your essay -not sure you want to. For legacy, there’s a drop down menu that has the choices of either parent or grandparent. No sib

trust me - you will get in… you are fine. I am in the hotel school. you have decent grades/scores, plenty of ECs, PLUS you have the exact type of work experience they look for. The fact that your sister goes here is a huge thing… you need to be borderline ■■■■■■■■ to have a sibling at cornell and not get in … at the VERY LEAST you’ll get guaranteed transfer… i’m calling it right now there is NO WAY you will get rejected… just don’t bomb the interview

Agreed with the above, i think sibling attending is huge from what I’ve heard and people I’ve met. Combined with decent grades/good SAT and hotel experience I think you have a very good chance.

sibling attending is not such a big deal…know of a current senior who thought her sister was heads and shoulders ahead of herself, and that sister did not get into Cornell.

memphismom… i go here… TRUST ME… siblings at cornell is HUGE more shockingly huge than legacy from a parent. I know at least 25 students with siblings who got in ED, RD or guaranteed transfer. i know of about 3 whose siblings did not get in but they werent good fits for the school. this person is applying to the hotel school and given that i’m a hotelie and know pretty much know stats on most hotelies i’m calling it right now i’ll be shocked if this person doesnt get in… as long as they are personable they should be fine.

ije28: thanks so much! im doing the interview tomorrow. thanks for telling me about the ldp program. ill be sure to mention it tomorrow.
and to momoftwoteens there is a way to indicate that a sibling attends cornell. its a separate section on the common app

IJE: “You need to be borderline ■■■■■■■■ to have a sibling at cornell and not get in”

Ouch!! Harsh & totally inappropriate!
I hate to argue with you, but you’re drawing conclusions that might not be accurate. The 25 students in your sample were accepted, but what you don’t know is if they would have been accepted even if they didn’t have sibs. You are passionate in what you say, but it might be a flawed deduction.

You also need to clarify: are you talking about having sibs specifically in the hotel school? If you’re talking about having sibs at Cornell, you are way off!! Unless you’re on the admissions committee, I doubt(hope) you don’t have stats on every hotelie!!
