Chances of getting into CSU Pomona?

hey im a Senior right now and i have a academic gpa of 2.59 and got 23 on ACT but im retaking ACT again, and im retaking spanish 2 rite now cuz i failed. the major im going to do is Buisness Admin. (Finance,Real Estate,and Law)department(I heard Buisness major was easy?)
The high school im attending is close to CSU pomona, i was wondering if my chances increase cuz im close.
I had a friend that just graduated(2010) and he got into fullerton and was on the waiting list for pomona, but he chose a challenging major for Pomona and had 1600 SAT, n 2.6 gpa.

well, bro, those are not impressive scores, and pomona is a very selective university will a very small acceptance rate. To tell you the truth, there will be loads and loads of people with better stats, so chances are slim with those credentials, sorry, but in my openion, pomona is a low reach. look elsewhere dude, still apply though!!

While your statistics are low for the average accepted student at CSU Pomona, if you meet CSU minimum admission criteria and you live in CSU Pomona’s service area your chances of acceptance are actually quite high. CSUs give high priority to applicants from their service areas even if they are not otherwise particularly competitive.

@Lemaitre1,

Cal Poly Pomona stopped going by the CSU minimum admission criteria a while ago and last year they stopped giving preference to local students all together. The latest averages are a 3.4 GPA and a 1060/ 1600 on the SAT.

@23rcc17,

First of all, it’s Cal Poly Pomona, not CSU Pomona. For a student in the local area, I am surprised you don’t know this. Second of all, CSUs only look at your math and reading portions of the SAT and not the reading part. SAT scores are out of a total of 1600. Your stats do seem low. The tougher majors are architecture, animal science and civil and mechanical engineering, so stay away from those. Otherwise, good luck!

my gpa is a 2.63 now and i am taking the ACT again on the 23rd. i just applied to cal poly pomona, few days ago and it said on the application that pomona admits all csu elgible applicants in the local service area. i think they would update the information each year on the application form. Since i am retaking span. 2 i put in progress and planned instead of my failing grades for junior yr, which means i am considered elgible? As long as i maintain a C or better for all classes during senior yr i should be accepted right?

Being eligible for admission and being guaranteed admission are two different things. Petrarch seems pretty familiar with Cal Poly Pomona and if he is correct that the school no longer distinguishes between local and non-local applicants for admissions and the average GPA is 3.4 there is no reason to believe you should be accepted. I do not know for sure but I think the policy of preference for students in a CSU’s service area is not mandatory and each of the 23 CSUs has the choice of whether to enact such a policy or not. Also, even though they may have given preference to students from their service area in the past, each CSU has the authority to change its admissions standards and policies at any time it chooses.
