As far as stats go:
Unweighted GPA: 2.7
SAT: 980
ACT: 17 ( Writing score: 9)
I’m a senior in high school and wondering if I have any chance of being accepted into LMU and if my essay for one of their prompts and reason for applying will be enough to convince admissions to accept me?
I know that LMU is definitely a reach goal for me, but I’m just curious as to whether or not there’s the slightest chance that I’ll be able to get in.
Average GPA for 2017: 3.75
25th percentile for SAT: 1180
25th percentile for ACT: 26
Admitted students with a 2.5-2.9 GPA was 1.4%.
Your stats show me that you are not ready for a 4 year university and it would be in your best interests to consider community college for 2 years than transfer. You need to show colleges that you are able to handle college work and your HS stats do not reflect this.
If you check the common dataset for LMU, GPA is considered very important. Essays, LOR’s and test scores are important. Having great essays will not overcome your GPA and test scores. Sorry to be blunt but you need to consider other options. If you are a CA resident, the CA community colleges along with non-impacted CSU’s would be your best chances.
Do you have a reason for lower GPA and test scores? For example, my daughter has friend who graduated with a
2.95 GPA, but had extenuating circumstances, which explained the drop in her GPA.
If you don’t have extenuating circumstances to explain your situation, you can always apply but try not to get your hopes up too much.
Wow @Gumbymom brutally honest with an emphasis on brutal! I can appreciate that you wanted to not give any false hope(mission accomplished) but please remember these are kids you are responding to.
And also the ironic part being that back when @Gumbymom was of college age those stats would have worked just fine in terms of getting into a school like LMU. Things are just a heck of a lot more competitive now.
I am sorry if I came on too strong but it is very competitive out there these days and students need to be fully aware and prepared to work hard in college to succeed. Community college is an excellent option for a transition into a 4 year university. I find it sad that many students are not ready for competitive college environments and end up dropping out. Community college is a great way for an individual to prove themselves and perhaps get into an even better college in the end.
@Gumbymom I agree with you that a 2.7gpa is more than likely not going to get an applicant into LMU, but I know there are less selective private colleges that would take that applicant and their chances of actually graduating would be much higher than going the community college route. In CA only 15% of students that start at community college end up transferring and finishing with a four year degree. You can find anecdotal evidence of certain cc’s doing a little better than this, but you get a lot of hand holding and support at private colleges, and just a lot of red tape and misinformation(which classes transfer, etc) at community colleges. Community colleges are inexpensive yet highly ineffective at the same time. I would put my money on a 2.7 GPA student starting and finishing a four degree at a private college vs. starting at community college and transferring every time. Community college is just another 2 years of high school except it’s even easier.
@Nataline, I don’t understand how anyone can definitively say whether a student has a chance or not of getting into a university based solely on numbers. Only the admissions committee knows exactly what it is looking for, and I say go for it. Just accept that there’s a chance that things won’t work out and have a backup plan.
Nataline, I just want to encourage you to always give it your best efforts, and you’ll be fine. Remember, college admissions is a two-way process - it’s about finding the best match for not only the student, but also for the university and what it has to offer. LMU’s admission process is holistic in nature, so they are more than just the stats. Regardless of where you end, the next several years of your life are sure to be filled with excitement and enrichment. I wish you the very best!
Hi there. I might be late to this but oh well. I am a current sophomore at LMU and I got in with a GPA similar to yours. However, I got a 29 on my ACT and made sure my essays were stellar. It’s definitely not impossible! If you have any questions let me know
@Gumbymom While you make good points and I would have agreed with you two years ago, I don’t anymore. As a current LMU student, my GPA was very similar in high school. At LMU, I have a 3.5 and am very involved on campus. Comparing high school and college is like night and day.
