Chances of plme or brown admissons

Hi, I just finished my junior year and am very apprehensive about my choices of colleges. Brown is definitely one of the top choices especially because its ivy and has a fantastic med program. To tell u more about me, I am an immigrant from India and attend a all girls catholic school. My gpa is a 4.0 out of 4.0 and I have a 97% overall average. I am ranked the first in my class as well.
My SATs were not to great: 1820, but I retook them last week. My SATIIs were ok. Bio 700, US Hitory 660, and Chem 680. I took 3 APs this year, BIO, US HISTORY, and English Language and Comp. Next year Ill be taking AP Calc, AP Lit, AP French, Anatomy and Physiology honors, Physics honors, etc, etc. Basically I have been taking a rigorous work load, however, unlike other schools, Theology is a mandatory course for all 4 years, therefore I have been unable to take a better course load.

I also took 2 college courses, Anatomy and Physiology and Statistics, and will be taking another this summer, Psychology. I took a course at Brown last year and will be taking a course at Tufts in medicine this year. I will also be attending the NYLC for medicine.

I would love to attend Brown so all of your comments and suggestions are welcome. If there is anything I should work on please do inform me. Thank you

Well your score will definatley keep you out of PLME.
You do have a slight chance at Brown if you improve that 1820 to over 2000 because you have good ECs. An 1820, though, won't pull it off.
I would say mainly work on your scores. Retake your subject tests too because they are belw average for Brown. Grades and ECs are good and you sound like you have a fairly unique story and personality. Scores are the only thing holding you back.

thank you for your suggestions iCantThinkOfaName2 . I have worked on my scores for my SATs and will find out my scores in 2 weeks. I fear that the standardized scores are the main things that will prevent me from getting into college. If I do poorly on the SATs again, I plan to take the ACT. I do plan on retaking my SATIIs aswell. Thank you for your input and hopefully, my scores will improve. :)

Wow, that's a lot of volunteer work and extracurriculars. Do you sleep at all?

But in regards to your question, no one on College Confidential knows crap about college admissions. There's the basics that we all know such as maintaining nice grades and decent test scores and doing EC's. But beyond that, we don't know much. Hence, we're all just hypothesizing here. Therefore it is important to take anything written on these forums with a grain of salt.

Generally, each school and med program has its own personality. Admission officers and a med program interviewer have actually mentioned this, so I'm going to assume its veracity. Consequently, each school or program looks for different qualities in its students, though a lot of these qualities seem to overlap. Furthermore, a thing to keep in mind is that it's not necessarily about the well-rounded individual, it's more about the well-rounded class. Hence it seems unfair that someone with a 26 ACT score but who's awesome at soccer can get into places like Stanford whereas someone who's got perfect scores across the board can't. But this is done for the sole purpose of creating a well-rounded class. It'll be pretty boring if everyone in a class at a particular school are pretty much the same, no?

So to truly answer your question, I believe you should apply to any school you wish to attend. You never know where you might get in. I know this from personal experience. I got into things that I never would've dreamed of. A friend of mine got into Harvard but was rejected (not even waitlisted) by MIT. And I've met someone who got into Harvard but got rejected by UPenn. You would think that the odds would be more against them at Harvard. (Yes, I do realize that Harvard is not Brown or even plme. But the same thing applies to any top notch school or program)

And If you don't get into a particular school or program, hey, don't sweat it. Yes, it may seem like the end of the world, but as my dad says, "It's 4 years of your life [or in your potential plme case, 8 years]. So in the grand scheme of things, it represents a rather small percentage of your life. What's more important is how you take charge of your college education. A graduate of a state school can be just as successful as anyone from the ivies." I know this may sound harsh, but sometimes, maybe you're just not what that school or program is looking for in that particular year. That doesn't make you any less qualified. It's like casting calls for a movie or a show. Though you may have the acting skills, maybe you just have the wrong face for the part. Just be sure to apply to a wide spectrum of schools and programs that you're willing to attend. Otherwise, you might end up very dissappointed with the results. It's not like actors and actresses only audition for one part to earn their daily bread.

So apply to Brown and plme as well as other colleges and programs you're looking into. I think you're a qualified person. But that's just me. :)

^^^ exactly.

thanks naturefreak525 and bruins. Your words are inspring. I do agree, that a lot of people incuding myself get bogged down by living up to ideals. I will definitely apply to a bunch of colleges and hope that they see that one aspect that they were looking for in their applicants. In the end, we can just hope, pray, and leave in God's or luck's hands. If I don't get accepted into that top college, well, then it wasn't meant to be. Regardless of my acceptances and rejections, I know that I will fit in and do my best in any university or college. Thanks again for the advice.

Oh yes, in regards to if I sleep at all, well I must say sometimes (that is when I have the time). :)

I will probably be applying to the following universities. Which ones would be reachs, safe, etc?

Harvard
Dartmouth
Tufts
BU
BC
George Washington
Brandies
Bowdoin
Johns Hopkins
Simmons
Brown

I have one more request. I was hoping if someone could tell me what I should mainly work on to prepare for the application process during the summer.

I think you have really really good ec activities. Are you planning on doing the 8 year program at some of the other colleges as well?

assuming you're current scores:

Harvard - big reach
Dartmouth - big reach
Tufts - slight reach
BU - match/safe
BC - slight reach
George Washington - match
Brandies - match
Bowdoin - very slight reach
Johns Hopkins - reach
Simmons - match
Brown - big reach

But it´s not always about scores.

If you look at the average test scores for someone matriculating into PLME, there´s bound to be people with scores in the 600´s as well high 700´s.

yeah, and all of them are black or hispanic

haha very true

Such things should be better kept to oneself.

Hi guys, thank you for all of the responses. I was just wondering if you could re-evaluate my stats. I just got my SAT score 2100. 280 pts higher. math 760, cr 730, writing 610. Do you think I have a chance now?? Or should I retake and improvve the writing section? Thanks and I look forward for your responses.

I don´t suggest taking the SAT more than 3 times. So the question is how many times have you taken the SAT? And ususally after a while, you´re just gonna feel so bogged down and tired from all these standardized tests that chances are you´re just not gonna do all that well. I´ve learned this from experience.

I think you should retake those subject tests. A 2100 puts you in the hunt , and if you're gonna have a low section writing is the best to have (though yours is very low). However, even with your new SAT scores and those subject tests, you wont get into the PLME. Bown may work out if your ECs and essay shine through and make up for the test scores.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/forumdisplay.php?f=5

but apply anyways. you never know what could happen. don´t ever let collegeconfidential discourage you. Sometimes it´s just the mood of the admissions officer. They are human.

work at those essays.

Yes, do apply. Admissions officer are looking for variety as well so scores aren't everything.

Brown, especially, is one university that can look past scores and see an individual with a passion for medicine behind a bunch of numbers. I really disagree with the icantthinkofaname dude.

Icantthinkofaname...how can you explain people with top notch scores getting rejected PLME and kids with lower scores getting in?

brown looks for an individual's character.
