Hi,
I am from Michigan and was thinking of ASU as an option, however only if I can figure it out to be less expensive as the University of Michigan. I am aware that me being out of state already puts me at a disadvantage, but I was wondering if someone could give me a guide to what i should/ shouldn’t expect in scholarships and aid at ASU. Below are my scores etc:

GPA: 3.71 (weighted out of a 4 point scale, also to take into consideration all honors and AP courses plus top ten school in the State of Michigan.)
ACT: 31 (taken twice with higher scores different categories each time, so my superscore is around a 33. My highest score was a 35 on Math.)
AP:
US History - 5
Biology - 5
European History - 3
and taking AP Chemistry, Government, Microeconomics, and Calculus this year.
I have a job in a photostudio where I deal with customers etc, as well as 2 years on the school newspaper in leadership/ editorial board positions (with the publication winning 1st then 3rd in the nation over the past couple years at the National Scholastic Press Association.) I am not sure how my extracurricular fit in however, as there was no essay to explain these.

Any advice would be appreciated, also can anyone shed light on the worth of an ASU degree? I am getting a lot of flak from people I know about apply and that my degree from there would be “worthless.”

You may be eligible for the President’s Award - $13,000 per year for out of state. ASU has strong departments (Business, Engineering, Anthropology, Asian Languages) and some innovative interdisciplinary science majors (School of Sustainability). They have graduates who are unemployed and graduates who are making lots of money or in Ivy grad schools - your outcome depends on what kind of student you are.

ASU for a year out of state costs $34,388 (and I immediately shaved off a grand because I would not have such a large personal expenditure as afforded in the budget) so I figure the ASU price would be $33,000 roughly. Now, applying the scholarship it would cost me around $20,000 a year. The University of Michigan (a much more prestigious school) would cost roughly $22,000 for instate here in Michigan without any sort of scholarships. Right now, it seems like Michigan is the better option, but is there a way to talk to admissions at ASU about getting more scholarship money? (“negotiating” it if you will.) Since right now, going to ASU does not really outweigh the more valuable UofM diploma (not to sound cocky but they are more prestigious/valuable)
