Hi guys! I am a junior at a small high school in the Florida Keys and I was wondering if I have a shot at getting into places like Berkeley and UNC. My SAT scores are 670 reading 770 math 630 writing. Composite is a 2070. I am ranked 4/196 and i pretty much get straight A’s in AP classes.
Schools I plan on applying to-
FSU (safety? my dad went there as well.)
UNC Chapel Hill
UC Berkeley
Stanford (Worth a shot)
Vanderbilt
Clemson
University of Miami
Tulane
UT-Austin
GPA- 4.31 weighted
2 yrs Varsity Soccer
2 yrs Varsity Track
Spearfishing Club
Environmental Club
NHS
Chess Club
Science Honor Society
Mu Alpha Theta Math Club
I have a passion for the ocean and I am an avid fisherman. I have a youtube channel and everything. Would putting the link to one of my fishing videos be good for an application? Over the summer I worked with the Coral Restoration Foundation to help restore staghorn and elkhorn corals. I plan to be an intern for them this summer as well. I am also going to Tallahassee over the summer to do Boys State. Only a handful of students get selected and we get to participate in activities with the Florida government. Any help on getting into college will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!
You look like a competitive applicant for UCB. Can you afford the costs: $55K/year with no financial aid?
If so, then UCB is worth an application. I would bump your SAT reading score for a better chance. Good Luck.
I would not apply for financial aid
Yeah I was thinking of UM because they have a great marine bio program with a double major offered. I am just not sure what I want to major in. I know everything about the ocean but I am just unsure of job availability in the field.
If money is not an issue, take a look at UC San Diego and Scripps Institute of Oceanography.
Here are my estimates, just based on my personal knowledge of the schools and your credentials.
FSU - Safety
UNC Chapel Hill - Match, but they are picky
UC Berkeley - High match, also picky
Stanford - High reach, but like you said, you never know. It’s a high reach for just about everyone.
Vanderbilt - Low reach/High match
Clemson - Safety/Low match
University of Miami - Match
Tulane - Intermediate match, hard to tell
UT-Austin - I know nothing about this school, but based on scores alone, low match/safety
Keep doing well and good luck!
Fsu: safety
UNC: high match its really hard OOS but you seem to be qualified
UCB: low reach again really hard OOS
Stanford: reach but as you said it’s a reach for almost everyone
Vanderbilt: low reach test score is a bit low for them and they are very score focused
Clemson: low match/match I think you’ve got a good shot
The U: seems like a great match academic wise and major wise
Tulane: match think you have a pretty good shot there
UT Austin: match its hard to get into OOS but you have a good chance

The following are based on the Naviance scattergrams for our school, which may or may not be applicable to you:
UNC: On the bubble. Only 18% of OOS applicants are offered admission, so the numbers are against you.
Tulane: While your scores appear to be in the “match” range, unless you show demonstrated interest (e.g., a campus visit), you likely will be deferred until Tulane determines your true interest.
Stanford: Forget it, don’t waste your time or money.
Cal - Berkeley: A tough reach.
Vanderbilt: On the bubble.
U Miami: Match.
Clemson: High match.
UT-Austin: Match.
FSU: Safety.
If you are interested in marine biology or marine science, maybe look into the College of Charleston, or the University of South Carolina at Columbia, where you would be a high match; or Boston University, where you would likely be a match.
Everything is dependent on being able to afford any of these schools, of course.
