Hi, I'm Jessy, and I'll be a senior as of monday.
I rank 7th (if not higher after last grading period) in my class of 585 students at my school in Southern California.
My UC GPA is 4.2
Weighted is 4.55 (I thought this was lower but this is what my councelor told me)
and Unweighted is 3.91

I've gotten a single B between the two semesters each year, so straight A's one semester and one B the other. It kills me. Lol.

I've taken the following AP classes
AP Biology (5)
AP World History (4)
AP US History (5)
AP English Language (4)
AP French Language (teacher was bad so I skipped the test)
and I'm taking AP Calc AB, AP Gov, and AP Art History next year.

I've also taken a handful of honors and accelerated classes.

I'm a four-year varsity track and field runner,
and played tennis last year (JV), and will probably play varsity this year.

I have 109 community service hours consisting of :
75 hours campaigning for the Democratic party my freshman year
a handful from coaching track and field for the Special Olympic atheletes
and the rest from taking care of autistic classes during parent/teacher trainings at a nearby elementary school. I plan on getting more involved with community service this year.

Not big on clubs, although I should be...only one year of Interact Club freshman year.

My SAT scores aren't so high, but I'm retaking them come fall, going to actually study and hope to get a 2000+ this time around.
1830 (590 math, 590 reading, 650 writing, 11 essay)
600 Math 2, 630 Biology subjects. (Going to take other tests if possible come fall).
ACT: 29
And, I think that's it.

yeah work on bringing up those SAT/act scores. your grades are pretty good. i think your EC are mediocre…if you can maybe a little more, but dont sweat it too much since UCs dont consider ECs as much as privates

other than that i think you have a decent chance

go for 600+ on a literature subject test and you should be alright. I would try and get into more school related things like clubs asap. try to get leadership positions in those clubs as well like treasurer or VP. Or if you can find a Relay for Life or AIDS cancer walk in your area, chances are your schools ASB is involved, so register under that team. I put a couple relay for lifes to fill up the 5 available spots for the school related community/ec/involvement whatever you call it category and it made the application flow better.

^ ACTUALLY I did a Cancer walk this year, I totally forgot. I didn’t get any hours for it because I went informally with my boyfriend because it was his little sister’s girlscout troop thing.
It was a 24 hour walk and you paid $10 to do it to raise funding for cancer patients. Didn’t do it all 24 hours though, just about 4 lol.
But I’ll do more ECs, Sports just keep me busy busy busy, and I’m looking for a job this year, otherwise I won’t be going to college at all.
Haha.

Your grades are on target. Your test scores are below average. You can probably retake them though. Your EC’s are below average.

The main problem with your EC’s is that you lack leadership positions. UC wants leaders, that means things like ASB/student gov’t/club officers, sport and academic team captains, and publication editors. You don’t have any of these.

Your sports participation is good and can lend balance to academic EC’s, but by itself it’s woefully insufficient.

Community service is okay, but aside from the political stuff (which was freshman year - why haven’t you done any since then?) it’s not very focused or cohesive; just a random handful here and there with minimal multi-year commitment demonstrated. Also, you only get a limited number of EC’s you can list. A couple hours on a cancer walk sounds cool but does that really make you a more qualified applicant? Not really. Maybe if you actually planned and organized a cancer walk, that would be more impressive, because it demonstrates leadership.

You need to find something in the fall that can give you leadership experience. Unfortunately it’s kind of hard to get leadership stuff if you haven’t been involved in the activity in the past. Not to say that it’s impossible, but it’s hard unless you’re really well-known and popular.

You might try to start a new club (not like a ping pong-type club, something more meaningful than that), or you might do my previous suggestion and organize a significant event for charity. You should also lobby your track coach very hard for a co-captaincy.

^ Blechk, I know I know. And ACTUALLY I’ve been doing the Special O’s stuff since I was about 10, my brother was in it. He passed away when I was seven and I’ve stuck with the special O’s. And track season isn’t until spring x(.
I think UCSB is aimed towards my major more, I’m looking at marine or molecular biology. I was really looking at the immunology and molecular genetics program at UCLA though ://
I’ll work on it and see what I can do for sure. I won’t give up that easily!

Edit// and I didn’t continue the political stuff because
A) the group didn’t recombine my sophomore year
B) It really bored me, and I didn’t feel like it helped anyone.

and to add to my stuff a bit,
I got to go on a trip to Scripps for this thing for students have excelled in biology. We got hands on experience. I don’t know if this is good, but I was one of only 5 students at my school who got to go.
