Chances to accepted into SJSU?

I applied to SJSU, SFSU, Fresno State, and CSULA.

In the fall semester, I got an F in my AP Calc AB class and I won’t be taking that class in the spring semester. Will the college be looking at that grade as a bad thing? I got pretty bad grades in my freshman and sophomore year but I improved a lot in my junior year.

GPA: 3.0
SAT: 1070
Community Service Hours: 150+ hrs
Part of an academy at my school.

Contact the schools to see if the F in senior year or dropping the course in the spring could endanger your admission.

If 3.0 is your CSU recalculated GPA, then your CSU eligibility index is 3.0 * 800 + 1070 = 3470. You can compare with past thresholds by major here: http://www.sjsu.edu/admissions/impaction/ . But thresholds do change year to year, so this year’s threshold may be different from last year’s thresholds. Many majors had thresholds below 3470 last year, but some majors like computer science, animation, and pre-nursing had much higher thresholds.

@ucbalumnus my major is pre-nursing so do you think it will be a bit harder to get accepted?

If you follow the link to http://www.sjsu.edu/admissions/impaction/impactionresultsfreshmen/index.html , you will see that the threshold for fall 2017 SJSU pre-nursing was 4150, so that makes SJSU pre-nursing a reach for you.

@ucbalumnus alright thanks for your help! I really appreciate it!

I think with an F Senior year along with a low CSU GPA, Pre-Nursing is not in the cards for you at any of the CSU’s listed. I think you can get an acceptance to these CSU’s as an Undecided or alternate major. You could then take the Nursing pre-req courses and hopefully do well enough to apply to Nursing schools after Sophomore year. All CSU Pre-Nursing/Nursing programs are impacted so you will need to have very competitive stats to get into these programs.

@Gumbymom So is there anyway that I can change my major at this point?

You would have to contact the CSU’s individually and ask. Some may let you change majors now and some may not so you need to talk to admissions at each school.

For my year, SJSU did not consider senior year at all. The only grades that matter are in sophomore and junior year. I think you’ll be fine to get into SJSU, but pre-nursing is still hard to get in. From what I know, there is little difference between pre-nursing and undeclared outside of advising and opportunities.

Senior grades are not considered for admission decisions but acceptances are provisional and the majority of the CSU’s expect applucants to pass a-g courses with a C or higher Senior year. Policies do vary at each CSU so it best to find out now your options so you can plan accordingly.
