*Didn't take any classes in Summer and Fall. Completing many major reqs during winter. 1 W in Fall
*Going to explain the B in English and C in Micro in essay. Also related to why I didn't take classes in Fall.

I had a solid 4.0 going into the final three weeks of last Spring but due to personal circumstances, my GPA took a hit as a result. I am worried that the UC would not listen to my explanation so I am wondering based on my stats alone, how does my chance look for the above schools?

I wouldn't be so sure to say OP in at UCLA.
They put into account two GPAs: Cumulative GPA and Major GPA.
Although OP's cum. GPA is definitely high enough (+ TAP) to get into the school, with a C in a very critical major prereq course will surely be a hindrance factor and be the main reason if in any case OP gets rejected.
I'd say UCLA is High Match/Low Reach

For Cal, reach.

P.S. Of course, my opinion is soley based on OP's GPA. His EC's excel and I'll assume he has a very legitimate reason for the subpar performance in the microecon. Putting all that into account will actually make OP a competitive candidate. But no ones knows how much the essay will be considered for admission. I'm sure most people came up with some sort of reason to explain their low grade in the essay, but assuming the admit rate for UCLA and Cal is below 50%, significant amount of those "legitimate reasoners" get rejected.

I am not sure whether if they will see my winter grades because I still need to get Calc, accounting and english 1C done. I am trying to pull off a 22 unit winter intersession and I am confident enough to say I believe I can still maintain my GPA esp since I have no classes this semester and can start preparing for calc before school starts.

Assuming I can maintain a 4.0 during winter and getting my cumulative gpa up to ~3.82, will the UC be able to see it since the winter intersession wouldn't be over by the time we have to update our apps? And how does my chances look if they will count my winter grades?

Btw, I guess it wouldn't hurt to share with you guys how I lost my 4.0 last spring. I had to take care of personal affairs and had no time for school during the final few weeks and I am pretty unlucky to say the least (although its mainly my own fault, I must say). For english, the actual grading scale and the one said in class differs and because I couldn't focus on the final, I finished it in 15 minutes and obtained a C (which would have been enough to get my A if the teacher didn't change her grading calculation on me.) For econ, I missed out on a 15% team project and decided to bs the final since I couldn't get an A no matter what but I guess I took it too far and completely bombed it. Went from a 97% to 78% in 2 weeks...LOL

I think he is hoping to reach for higher though =)

I hear (from counselors, from these boards) that they most likely won't even look at your winter grades. The deadline to submit fall grades is Feb 15... I don't know about you but my winter grades won't even be out by then.

Good luck!

In my opinion, in for UCLA because of the high GPA + TAP

7 units Fall 06
7 Units Winter Intersession 07
26.5 Units Spring 07
0 Units Summer Intersession 07
0 Units with a W Fall 07

Planned: 22 units Winter Intersession 07 <---- I really hope they can look at this....but sadly my grades come out a week after I have to update my courses for the uc....
