Chances to get into Carnegie Mellon?

Hi, I am wondering about the chances I have to get into Carnegie Mellon with these requirements that I have:

Ethnicity: Asian

SAT score : 2200

SAT 2 Math 2: 720
SAT 2 Chemistry: 760
SAT 2 Physics: 700

Honors/AP classes taken in first three years of high school:

Honors Biology

Honors Earth Science

Honors Trig/PreCalc

AP Chemistry

AP Computer Science A

Spanish 1-4

Honors English 9, 10

AP World History

Chorus 9, 10

Honors Physics

AP English Lang.

AP US History

Design Engineering

CADD

Classes Taking in Senior year:

AP Calculus BC

Robotics

Pre-engineering

AP Physics C mech

AP Statistics

AP English Lit.

Organic Chemistry

Linear Algebra

Cumulative GPA: 3.6 (unweighted)

I taught myself Calculus AB in junior year and got a 4 on the AP exam.

My AP exam scores:
AP World History: 4
AP Calculus AB: 4
AP Chemistry: 4
AP Computer Science: 3
AP English Lang: 2

Extracurricular Activities:

Varsity Cross Country

Debate Team

FIRST Robotics Team (leader)

Spanish honor society

Tri-M music honor society

National honor society

Green Team

Leo club (Historian)

Academic Team (Leader)

Also other community service and leadership roles

What are my chances?

You seem to be taking very advanced classes. Have you won any competitions with your Robotic team? That’d probably help. You should definitely retake your Math Level 2 and get an 800. You might want to consider retaking your Physics Subject Test as well.

Other than that, I suppose you have a good chance.

We haven’t won any competitions yet. And I still have a chance to retake the subject tests, so I can try that.

Are you applying to CIT, SCS, or …?

You’re definitely a competitive applicant, but CIT and SCS are very hard to get into. Your AP scores are certainly not bad no 5s and a UW GPA of 3.6 may count against you. Agree that you have taken some interesting classes, however.

I was planning on applying to school of computer science…but I might do school of science, I’m still deciding.

you can def get in.

Honestly, SCS is a high reach. It’s getting harder each successive year–this year it rejected some who were accepted by MIT. I’d say MCS is a low reach, although applying early could very possibly swing you in.

Apply to some match schools–for engineering look at RPI, Case Western, Georgia Tech, Illinois@Urbana Champaign, WPI. (Look into FIRST scholarships for these.)

Good luck!

CMU SCS is a big reach. But the 3 on the AP CS could be a red flag for a CS candidate - that’s thought to be an easier AP, and CS SCS will be filled with 5’s (among those who took it).

You seem to have great chances just make sure your application is genuine and shows you as a person, not something that colleges would want to see.

If I were you I would aim for something a little higher, maybe Georgetown?

If I were you I would aim for something a little higher, maybe Georgetown?

Not sure whether you’re joking, but for CS he’s pretty much targeting the top of the heap - one of the very best and most selective programs. He’d have much better chances at Georgetown …

It’s honestly somewhat frightening how clueless some of the “chancers” are on this board. Even more frightening is that the OP really can’t possibly know which posts are realistic. There should be some sort of accuracy rating on CC or something.

hey guys, im a junior in highschool right now, and i am planning on going into CMU for CS. I have overall pretty decent stats, but I was looking through the CS requirements and it said that applicants require 3 years of science. I beleive I have 3 years of science, Physics&Chem, Bio, and i am taking Environment Science my junior year. My parents weren’t sure if APES counted as a science course, so can someone tell me if it does.

Further, over the summer of 2012, I am planning on attending the APEA course at CMU. I wanted to know if by taking this course, my chances would be higher into getting into Carnegie Mellon. Also, kindly suggest me the courses that I should take at APEA that would put me in the right direction of getting into Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science.

Thanks

My top schools that i would really like to get into for aerospace engineering or some other related major are caltech, carnegie mellon, and university of Michigan, Berkeley
do i stand a chance at getting into any of these?

You don’t have any chance for aerospace engineering at Carnegie Mellon. Sorry to give you the bad news, but there’s not a more selective program in the nation than CMU AE.

I think you’ve got a good chance for Carnegie Mellon, particularly if your math SAT was high, although your GPA is just a bit low, but not nearly enough to disqualify you.

Please chance me back.
