Oh and I work summers at my pool as a lifeguard, and will hopefully be volunteering this summer at the local hospital

My teacher rec's should be great along with my counselor since he's known me forever.

What are the chances of me being accepted into the nursing program? I recently took the SATs again in May, and I'm hoping my scores will get at least a little better.

I’d say you are right on the edge of acceptance. Your M/CR SAT could be higher but you have a lot of good ECs. Even though it is not required you might want to spend the Summer writing a terrific personal statement. Send it to Pitt with your application (before Sept 1st) and I think you’ll get in. Good luck!!!

ah I know this may sound stupid…but what exactly is a personal statement?

Congratulations on your outstanding accomplishments and you are exactly the kind of student that we need to go into nursing! I truly hope that you are admitted. Believe it or not, your status as an out of state student may help! I think that you have a pretty good chance, but to clinch it…
I would suggest that you do the following:

  1. Practice, practice, practice math and critical reading questions so that you can get that score up just a little! A 1300 math/critical reading would be fantastic.Use a study guide book or a website to practice about 15 minutes a day until the October test.
  2. Make sure that you volunteer or work in a direct patient care situation (not just “hopefully”, make it for sure!) Perhaps your local children’s hospital accepts volunteers in the child life department, or you can volunteer at a local extended care facility to make “memory books” with the patients, or work in a local clinic that caters to an underserved population, or something of this nature. Then, write your personal statement (that is, an essay on your college application that asks you to tell about yourself) about this experience.
  3. Call, and ask for an “informational interview” at the School of Nursing. If they will grant this to you, be very enthusiastic during the interview, tell them how excited you are about the school, and ask what you can do to boost your admission chances. Be prepared to answer questions about what interests you in nursing. Many Pitt students want to go into transplant nursing, oncology or critical care, but you do not have to say this if these are not what interest you. You can even say that you love caring for people, that you love all ages, and that you will decide once you get into your clinical rotations. Do say that you know that Pitt will give you a great foundation for graduate school. They want to educate future nursing leaders and if they see you as one of those, they may just communicate that to the admissions office.
    Good luck!

thank you!!! SAT scores come out tomorrow, so I’m hoping it will go up!
And after school gets out and I’m home from Girl’s State, my mom and I will be taking a road trip to see some schools including Pitt, UMich, and maybe a few others…I’ll definitely remember to schedule an interview with the nursing admissions.
Do you recommend taking SAT IIs?

For Pitt, you will not need the SAT IIs.

thanks this is a lot of help :)
I’m pretty much revamping my senior schedule right now…
which would be more helpful…AP chem or AP Bio? I’ve taken both bio and chem honors already. Bio was an easy A, but I had like a mind block when it came to moles in chem (plus it didn’t help that my teacher was extremely monotonous and sent me to sleep all the time…)
I don’t want to kill myself senior year, but then again I don’t want to slack off either.
So which ones out of these choices would you recommend taking?
AP US 2*
AP Psych
AP english*
AP Chem
AP Bio
calc h/statistics h (in my school stats is EXTREMELY hard and the teacher isn’t much help either…last year the only kid who got an A was caught cheating, and so technically, no one actually got an A…also my homeroom teacher teaches calc h, and she says it would be easier)
*s are non-negotiable with my parents/counselor

Concerning you senior schedule:
The following link is to a similar discussion on the Nursing forum recently. If you haven’t reviewed that forum yet you might want to read some of the posts. Lots of good information from knowledgeable (IMHO) posters.

May SATs just came in today!
CR 690
M 650
W 620
1340/1600
1960/2400

^^^
Good scores. Apply early and you should be fine.

Excellent scores
Apply early
Best of LUck

From what I hear from DD, both chem and bio are difficult courses. You might want to take whichever one is more difficult for you in your senior year. That way, you will have more of a foundation when you are a college freshman.

Organic Chem for Nursing majors is a tough course. Choose the course you are most interested in and do well in it. I don’t think as a nursing major that you will be able to place out of the required nursing science courses with AP credits. However, AP Psychology will allow you to skip the Intro Psych required course and take a higher level Psychology course. This will prove beneficial to you.

Thanks! I re-did my courses on Friday
AP US Hist 2
AP English
AP Psych
AP Chem
Statistics Honors

crider- Great course selection. I think you made wise choices. Do well in your courses, apply early, and you should be admitted. Good Luck!
