Hi guys, I know you all have probably seen about 500 or more of these. But I have a pretty unusual case, so I just wanted some more opinions since I've been freaking out about this whole Duke ED decision coming out tomorrow.
I'm Asian with 3.65 GPA, 2270 superscored SAT, 760 in SAT2 Biology, 780 in SAT2 Chinese, and go to a top 50 high school in the nation. However, I have 15 AP exams completed (13 of which are from courses I took in school), and 4 or 5 on all of them (besides a 3 in AP European History), so I received the National AP Scholar award as a Junior. I'm also an AMC winner, and AIME qualifier (American Math Competition), and a foreign language essay contest winner.
My extra-curriculars include: Captain of Varsity Swimming Team, about 4 years worth of Boy Scouts (never got to Eagle), Youth Group volunteering, and Swimming Instructor (paid work). All of which took relatively large time commitments.

TOMORROW?!? Omg! Thats so exciting!! Asking for a chance isnt the smartest thing to do a day before the decision, some mental impact thing. I wish Cornell wouldve released earlier…

Anyways, You seem like a good applicant. Do post your decision here. :)

Yepp tomorrow… I’ve really been freaking out because Duke is like the most ideal school for me haha, and good luck with Cornell!! I just wanted a couple more opinions to ease my mind a bit, this is really all I’ve been thinking about for the past 2 days. I’ll update when I hear back from Duke. One of my friends is anxiously waiting on Cornell too, so good luck to the both of you! :)

As a current Duke student, and with all the love in the world, go do something else right now. Results are coming out tomorrow. Nothing we tell you is going to mean anything after decisions release. Try to enjoy your senior year, please.

None of us can predict what your chances are, particularly with your impressive APs and your relatively low GPA.

Yeah I’ve pretty much accepted that. I’m just leaving the thread up so I can post results tomorrow.

I was deferred, unfortunately.

I cannot believe that you were not accepted. You had great ap, sat scores. Gpa was a little lower however it should have been balanced by good ec and scores. Something went wrong in the selection process. I am sure you will get in rd.

I believe Gutentag said that about 80% of Duke applicants are qualified for the school such that they would do well here. I could be slightly off on the number, but I’m almost positive it is between 75 and 85%. Even for high school valedictorians the admit rate is about 20% (I guess this varies year to year, but that was true in my year). Duke gets a ton of qualified applicants, and even a lot with really cool ECs. Good luck in the RD round, have a good semester and then send them a note in a month or two letting them know that you are still interested and update them on anything that you may have accomplished since you turned in your application.

Thanks all for the support! I have not given up on this. Duke is easily my dream school, and I will see this through to the end. I’m working with my guidance counselor to do whatever it takes to make me as competitive as possible for the RD pool haha. So as of now, that would be, to keep my senior grades up. (currently taking 5 APs and Multivariable Calculus, and getting all As or better with the exception of a B in AP Government, history is not my strong suit, but working as hard as I can!)
