Chances?

Ethnicity: I'm multiracial, specifically North African and Hispanic, but it's not evident by looks alone, so I'm probably not going to apply as a minority.
Citizenship: US
School: One of the best high schools in NY

GPA: 94.7
SAT Scores
Math: 800
Writing: 800 Essay: 11
Critical Reading: 730
(All based on practices, I've been putting off the SATs, but if I was to superscore my practices it would be a 2400)
SAT IIs: I'll be taking the World History, Chemistry and Math II SAT IIs. I've no doubt I can get an 800 on World, and I'm aiming for 750+ on Chem and Math

National Merit Scholar

7 APs by the end of junior year: 5 on AP Computer Science, 5 on AP World History so far. By the end of this year I'll have taken English Language, APUSH, Biology, and I'm self studying Calc AB and Psychology

ECs: 3 years on the fencing team (I'm the captain)
3 years of Science Olympiad
1 year on our mock trial team (But I'll probably be president next year)
I compete nationally in fencing, but I'm in no way remarkably skilled.

I've been out of school for about a year due to mental illness (It's brought my grades down significantly), but I'm planning on writing about it in my essays

My goal is to get into MIT, but for the most part I'm illiterate when it comes to admissions and whatnot, so I'd appreciate if someone could point me in the write direction concerning what schools I should be considering

Honestly if you’re multiracial you should indicate so on your application even if you think you don’t look multiracial. It could be a big advantage.

Guiding people in school selections is one of my favorite things to do. But first, as there are so many schools out there, just answer a few questions: do you want a big school, small school or no preference? Near a city, or not near a city, or no preference? Also, any ideas on area of study? Not necessary at all but could help narrow down the options. would love to give you some suggestions if you answer these questions!

onlythebest13: I’ve been putting “Other” on most forms I’ve had to fill out, so I think I may just stick with that

ptkid16: I’m planning on studying Computer Science. The size of the school isn’t really important to me, but I’d like to live closer to a city.

@kawakami: I think you shouldn’t mention ‘mental’ illness in your app. In ideal world, this shouldn’t be a problem, but colleges wouldn’t want to admit someone with a history of mental illness. I know that this bias is wrong, but if I were you, I’d avoid talking about it. Just say you were ill.
Something similar is the case with me. I’m an atheist, but I did write my religious preference even when I don’t like religion.

For CS, look into UCs. Look into UMich. Gatech. You can have some of them as safeties and MIT as reach.
Thanks for chancing me!
