I know my extracurricular are sub par. Is there anything I can do to improve my chances other than retaking SAT/ACT (which I plan on to do)?
Your chances look OK. Being in-state is an obvious plus. ACT score is marginal with the 25th percentile being 28. SAT Math is excellent (about the 75th percentile) but the verbal side needs to improve (probably in the 25th percentile). Unweighted GPA is OK but lower than the 3.8+ range desired. Weighted GPA at 4.5 is probably on the low side. That will and will probably improve with your course load but if you apply Early Action (Oct. 15) it will not be available on first reading of your application.
A large group of accepted students are in the top 10 of their class and 77% are in the top 10%. There is good information available at UNC’s site regarding class statistics (as well as many other sites). Does your school place many students at UNC and do they have a good success? Have you taken AP tests and received strong scores?
Do you have a leadership role in any of your EC clubs or activities? Taking the lead or starting a club is a plus for an application. Quality of involvement trumps quantity.
As you will see in many threads, having strong essays is a must for a strong application. Of course the essays must be well written but also need to give the reader a look at your personality and what you have to offer to UNC. Make sure you tell your unique story. If you plan on applying for early action, be working on your essays early. The prompts should be available now and some are designed to show your creativity.
This may be a little discouraging but I wanted to be honest. By the way, my child was a marginal applicant just looking at the numbers BUT, she was accepted and has flourished at UNC, achieving and an excellent GPA and taking full advantage of the opportunities available. Best of luck to you!
