Chances?

I've always been a really huge fan of UMich for a variety of nonacademic reasons, and coupling those with its scholarly successes really makes it the top school I want to attend.

I would be applying OOS, as I am a student at one of the most competitive public schools in California. My real academic drawback is my GPA- although I've always taken the most competitive courseload, my cumulative soph/junior GPA is uw 3.0, w 3.88:

Soph
HEng - B
HChem - B
HGeom - B
Spanish 3 - B
World Hist - A
PE - A

Junior
HEng - B
HPrecalc - B/C
AP Bio - B
AP Music Theory - B
Health/Weight Training - A
APUSH - A

The only saving grace I think I might retain is my test scores.

SAT I - 2200w/ 800 on CR, 720 on Writing, 680 on Math
SAT IIs - 760 Bio, 750 Lit, projected 700+ on Math 2C and USH
PSAT - 227

My ECs are

Debate captain- I haven't been really competitive (though I was successful my freshman year) because I've been focusing on the instructional and monetary aspects of our club. I am the senior instruction coordinator as well as the camp director for a summer camp that is projected to break $20,000 in funds for our club (almost quadrupling the success of last year).

Camp counselor- At an outdoor nature camp, I've spent about 300+ service hours acting as a camp counselor for 5th graders.

I'm also pretty focused on music. I've reached level 7 in CM in the past, and, as a self taught guitarist, I've written original compositions and performed them both in my music theory classes and digitally to online audiences.

I probably would either sign up as a Philosophy major or as undeclared.

Thanks for reading this! I would really appreciate feedback... Sorry for getting a little longwinded. Normally, I wouldn't sorry as much about getting into college but I really, really, really, like UMich and would enjoy going there more than going anywhere else.

Sorry if i sound harsh...but i gotta say it looks like getting in will be an uphill battle for you...although your ec's are good...your umich gpa combined with the fact that you are oos is really holding you back...if you continue taking a hard courseload and do better senior year...i think your chances go up a bit...

Don't worry about sounding harsh man. I was kind of afraid of people holding back a bit because of me really wanting to go to UMich. Still, I'm being realistic and I recognize that my grades suck (to the extent that I'm around 3-4 As away from being average) and that UMich is stretching things. I just have two questions- I heard somewhere that being OOS helps because you have to pay more money- is this true? And how much of a reach is UMich for me?

Bumpity bump.

your test scores are obviously well above average for Michigan applicants, but you REEEEALLY need to get that GPA up to like a 3.3 Michigan GPA in order to be competitive.

Thanks for the info... I think a combination of my GPA and a relative dearth of good recs will probably negate any advantage my ECs/SATs give me so I guess I'll be applying to just the UCs. Thanks again!

Definitely apply to michigan. This past year, apps with your scores were likely waitlisted, then accepted. There is no harm in trying, ESPECIALLY since you said Michigan is the top school you'd like to attend. I think you should apply to your top school no matter how hard you think it is, and even more so if you have a good shot, which i think you do.

That definitely means a lot man. Thanks. I just wanted to update this with my final, conclusive stats to see if anyone has anymore input.

UMich GPA: 3.04
SAT I: 2200 (CR: 800, Math: 680, Writing: 720)
SAT II: Math 2C: 770, Lit: 750, Bio: 760

ECs: Debate captain at a nationally competitive debate team
300+ hours of being an outdoors camp counselor

And again, I'm OOS.

Any advice is really appreciated.

your gpa looks a little low.. but great scores nonetheless.

UM is harder to get in if you are out of state, not easier

go for it... you definitely have a shot, i wouldn't say a great shot, but a shot nonetheless
