Chances

Hi, I've posted here asking for chances a lot, but I've never got any decent responses besides don't worry about this right now. I just wanted to know however if I'm on the right track towards getting into Umich, or if I need a lot of work to stand a chance. btw, how does Umich recalculate GPA, and if you have the time, can someone tell me my re-calculated GPA? Thanks

IN SUMMARY: I should finish high school with around 3.75 or 3.8 UW GPA, but I'll do what ever I can to prevent that from happening. If I go down in flames, then I'll end up with a 3.7.

*Right now I get about a 1920-2050 on the SAT, 28-30 on ACT according to Practice Tests for SAT, and the PLAN (it's like the PSAT for SAT except the ACT version) on ACT, but I'm shooting for at least a 2100 on the SAT and 32 on the ACT. Don't count on me getting a 2100 or a 32 because its not going to happen as far as I can tell right now

If there is a personal statement, I will talk about why I've gotten poor grades, and how despite forming a study group, taking a $1000 SAT class, taking >10 practice tests I've managed to fail the SAT, plus why I want to go to UM-AA.

Please tell me my chances,
Thanks

ur chances are good but quite honestly, i think that topic's a poor choice for the personal statement. it seems like ur making excuses for ur poor test results and that's NOT wat umich wants to hear. oh that and, there is no open ended essay/personal statement. u get three choices. and that's it.

I agree... that personal statement is not a wise move.

Also, don't count yourself out on standardized tests... You're a first semester junior. Your scores will naturally increase (most likely), especially if you keep practicing. You might want to consider focusing on one test... either the ACT or SAT. I can tell you I've read multiple threads on which is the most coachable, etc. At the end of the day, decide which one is best for you and go for it. My standardized test scores increased by a fair amount between my first semester junior year and senior year.

As for how UM recalculates GPA, I BELIEVE they throw out your freshman year and count only the academic classes thereafter. (Hopefully, someone else can confirm this.) Also, they throw out pluses and minuses.

With the recent ban on AA, your race, gender, etc. won't really matter ... despite what our President said the day after the election. (I hope she gets off the legal challenge route and seeks to actively recruit a diversified class. Active solicitation of quality applications from diverse candidates will be a more effective way to deal with the ban.) The fact you're from Oregon will help more than AA.

I would also focus on the ECs that you spent the most time on. You have a lot and you should indicate what is the most important to you.

The only comment I will make on chances is that if you focus on the right things over the next year, you should be able to significantly improve your chances.
