Well I would like to apply right when the application comes out, but the earliest SAT/ACT is in October, so I don't know what to do. Also, I'm not in any APs next year, but several dual-enrollments. Right now I am scheduled in English 13-1 and English 13-2, which are the same as English 101 and English 102 for college. I do, however, have the option of taking AP English instead. Which do you think would look better/be more beneficial?

Are you able to personally visit Admissions? If so, I'd suggest establishing a relationship with one of the officers (your parents may be a help here) so that you can get a solid read on your chances and see, since the decisions come out first in November, what can be done with regard to the October scores. (remember to try and take a prep course, if possible. If not, establish a reliable schedule towards studying for the SAT/ACT and do it.)

A DE is about as good as an AP, but still try for as many APs as you can.

When FSU calculates your weighted academic GPA, APs are weighted a full point while dual enrollment classes are weighted the same as honors -- a half point. The good thing about DE classes is that you gain additional college credits for passing the course while AP classes may not result in college credits depending on how you score on the AP exam.

The most important year is your junior year since the final grades and activities from this year is the one the colleges will use to evaluate your GPA. The rigor of your senior course schedule helps, but admissions decisions will be made before you finish the senior year classes.

I live in NY, so I wouldnt be able to visit admissions. I have bought a few SAT books though for October. What do you think a safe score is?

Really safe? 1250 minimum.

Since 1206 was average before the large influx of freshmen for Fall 2007 and no one knows what the average is today as the figures haven't been released yet, plus allowing for a possible 15% cut, that's what I'd consider "safe".

I would recommend you take an instructor-led SAT course. Most kids aren't disciplined enough to go correctly through that material on their own.

Also - FSU still appears to take the best combination of scores from a series of SATs or ACTs. One could almost focus on one section at a time...

Hold on - I just read your original post - be sure to take as many APs as possible and get the best grades you can.

Shoot for 1300 to be really safe.

Well I did take an instructor course and it really didnt do much. It helped slightly for the reading section (50) but not much. Math went up 10 but that obviously is so small it had nothing to do with the course. I still have the book we were required to buy so I think I'll use that. I shouldnt lack motivation because of how much I'd like to go to FSU.

Also, I received this email today which is good news...

Dear Michael,

Thank you for replying. In regards to your SAT Scores, we always encourage students to be in the first decision group regardless of whether or not they believe their current test scores resemble their best academic work. We will always consider a student based on new data in the later decision dates.

Additionally, the first notification date includes the October SAT as well as the September and October ACT. Although the grades usually take 3-5 weeks to arrive, we have framed our decision dates to accommodate those test dates.

Feel free to contact us with further questions.

Outstanding - now you have authoritative information.
