I graduated early (got the credits and the school said I had to graduate once I had the credits) and I am taking a year off. I spent the last 2 months in China doing volunteer work in Ya'an and other areas of central China.

I will not require financial aid.

I am interested in East Asian Studies (Modern Languages and Literature), Political Science and Creative Writing. (For Creative Writing I have won SKOW Awards if that is of any weight at all.) I am ultimately interested in law school.

I can get very good recommendations from my teachers, my math teacher (hopefully with augument my crappy math score... my coursework has always been very good with her) and my english teacher have already offered to write me great recs. Writing is my strong point so I think I can have good essays.

My English teacher is an W&M Alum and would give me a very strong recommendation.

I am planning on taking the ACT in Feb for a hopefully better score. Does W&M accept it?

Do I have a shot at all? I know my math SAT is low...

Is there a place for a chuck taylor wearing, alternative/punk rock/indy music loving, agnostic, liberal bookworm at W&M? I get along pretty well with anyone, but I don't want to stick out like a sore thumb for 4 years.

I think you'll get in...what do your math class grades look like.

Is there a place....? My freshman D fits your description almost exactly, down to the chuck taylors. She seems to be doing well and has found friends...there seems to be a wide range of students at William and Mary, with its share of those who might be a bit quirky...

Thanks. My math grades were all A's (maybe one B freshman year for a semester? I don't remember exactly). I just bombed the SAT for some reason, hopefully I will do better on the ACT.

I'm glad to hear that there are some quirky students there, when I visited I wasn't sure that there were.

Thanks for the help.

You may land in Williamsburg. My counsel in light of that and your lack of interest or awareness of your critical area is to have a decent plan B in mind. I'm personally optimistic. Perhaps you can get the Queen to write a letter of support? Wm&Mary is the ONE place that may have some real clout! ;)

Your China time will merit a more careful look and lends hope to your case. The $$ thing makes no diff. And I'm betting that the ACT will enhance your portfolio. But because you're late in coming to that party, in the absence of knowledge of your performance there, get that plan B in order, just in case. Good luck.

P.S. Assume you've taken the SATs more than once? Were I an admission officer, I'd want to see how important this really is to you and multiple takes, even with poor performance in M, would be to your credit. If not ... well, I've offered my perspective. You cannot avoid your achilles and be assured they've identified it well. These dudes are expert in IDing avoidance, procrastination, etc. Yours has a slight taint sp? of such?? Were I you, I'da hit that head on as it cannot be hidden. Ex: Have an expert math teacher write one of your letters. The multiple tries on the test. You're obviously generally a very fine "test taker" so you cannot use that one with any credibility. Show them you can do it on the ACT. Offer up quickly not just your math grades, but perhaps a brief portfolio of what you've been studying. None of these can hurt you. That damage has been done. Only could help, imo.

Everything but your SAT score seems really good. I agree that you should try to take it again (there is a test date in late January). Do you not have any athletic involvement? Or team involvement for that also helps a lot. But with a good essay, even the worse SAT testers can get in. Good Luck!

In response to your Chucktaylors comment, if you come here you'll get to know the Meridian Coffeehouse crew pretty well. Its a student run house that serves coffee and has shows/dance parties.

Check it out.

Hmmmm.....................did you take AP Calculus? What is the highest level of Math that you have taken. It's interesting that you graduated early and took a year off. This makes your application stand out. Seriously you sound like "one of us" already. Yes, William and Mary will consider the ACT score as well as SAT. The problem is that you are entering a very competitive field of applicants. Your SAT Math scores are not just low...............they are very low and this does not look good. Your GPA is just OK, not standing out either. I'm going to say that you will be Waitlisted, however I would not be surprised if you were accepted. Your application could go either way. IMHO. Best of luck.

Thanks a lot for the info guys, but after talking to a few other people and doing some more research, I just don't think that W&M will be the right school for me, and since it isn't a safety, it just doesn't make sense to apply.

Thanks a lot though!
