Well, I'm an English major, and i have a 3.56 GPA..the thing that bothers me most is my school doesn't do + and - grades, and i think that hurt my gpa a bit....Finishing this semester i will have met all the pre-reqs, taken 60+ units, and be IGETC certified....yet i still have such a pessimstic view, and am terrified of the idea of rejection. I applied to both UCD and UCB..I hope to attend law school once i graduate, so getting into a UC is very important to me, as it will bolster my chances. I've already been accepted to SJSU, and i have that at the side as my fall back plan, but hopefully I won't have to go there! I thought i had a high enough GPA, (Davis' site says you need a 2.8) but upon viewing these forums it seems mine may not be high enough! My hopes aren't too high into getting UCB, but i remain hopefull for UCD I wish i could just know already! What do you guys think?

I would say you've got a really good chance for Davis. Berkeley might be a slight reach.

Do you have any extracurriculars?

You're coming from a CCC, right?

yea but no1 gets accepted with that 2.8 (minimum gpa to even get looked at)
you should apply to UCLA too
and i agree with academichopeful on those schools

I think you have a good shot at UCB. The academic division that English falls under has a relatively high acceptance rate. Also if you look at the acceptance threads from previous years, you will see many acceptances for English majors within your gpa range.

UCB english isn't competitve at all.... they have 40something percent admit rate and if your done with ur pre-req/IGETC... 3.56 u have a good shot!

"UCB english isn't competitve at all.... they have 40something percent admit rate and if your done with ur pre-req/IGETC..."

What about all that, a 3.06 GPA, and a really good excuse for having said GPA?

Do you have any extracurriculars? Have you overcome any hardships, etc.? What things do you have that separate you from the bunch, Darwin. That's the type of thing Berk is looking for.

Yeah. I'll be specific here.

I helped form a book club/writing circle that has met every week for about 2 years now. I wrote all about it in my longer statement of purpose, which I think was quite good. It also goes hand-in-hand with my major.

As for hardships, definitely. I won't get into it too much, but I wrote about my best friend's suicide and how I dealt with everything that followed. I hated to play the sympathy card in my essay, but that obviously really affected me (and my grades).

The only downside (I think) is the low GPA... Last year, Berkeley admitted something like 130 people in my GPA range -- only 6% of their total admits.

Lord Darwin.. im not sure about 3.06... that's kind of low.... you should get in to Irivne or so..

I'm sorry to hear all that. Well, I think you probably have a shot. Where else did you apply?

UCI, UCSC, UCD, UCLA, UCB

Already accepted to UCI.

congrats Lord! i heard UCI english is pretty good..the reason why I said you should get in to UCI is because my cousin got in to UCI english major last yr with 2.7GPA... so

Torrance: is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Good thing for the people who wants to go to UCI..

Feels like UCI is letting everyone in this year. What's up with that? Hell, I might as well go to UCR.

hmmm... im not sure about that... Depends on the major but UCI is more prestigous than UCR.. Generally speaking, for california resident.. up to UCSD is not that hard. UCLA and UCB is competitive(depending on the major)

Torrance: What's your top choice?

UC Berkeley but im cool with UCLA also. WHat is your top choice?

So where would you put UCD among those? Below UCB and UCLA? would it be considered among the top tier or the middle to lower tier UCs?

My top is the same as Torrance. I didn't apply to UCD because they didn't offer Econ.
