Chances

Hey guys, just had a question. My brother is going to be a senior in high school this fall and is thinking about UofM. He has a 3.97 GPA or something (on Michigan's scale a 4.0) and has taken a pretty tough schedule with honors and AP classes. He got a 24 on the ACT (kinda low for UofM and he may retake it). He is also on the golf and hockey teams and goes to a camp to work with kids with MD during the summer. He's also instate and wants to go into pre-med or something like that I don't remember what he said.

But what do you think his chances are?

The acceptance rate for students with ACTs under 26 is pretty low. So I would say Michigan is a reach for your brother. This said, his GPA is excellent and should keep him in the running. If your borther can raise his ACT to 29 (the Michigan mean), I would say he has a good chance. Less than a 26, his chances are not good.

If he wants any chance at U of M he will retake that ACT. Get it up by at least 2-3 points. Right now, it just looks like he was in an easy high school.

hmmm, i don't think he has "no chance" and I disagree about the easy high school comment. I know a lot of students who've been accepted to top schools with 3.9+ GPA's (from GOOD schools) and ACT scores out of the range. Keep in mind a school would rather have a student who works hard and does well in school and happens to be a poor standardized test taker than have a slacker who has steller ACT scores.

I'd say it's a moderate reach for him since he's in-state.

UMrunner, I agree that "no chance" is extreme. The OP's brother has a decent chance. However, the acceptance rate for non-URM appkicants with ACT scores under 26 is pretty low. Jimmy is quite right. Michigan would be a bit of a reach but certainly a possibility.
