@Fulfilling : You need to figure out the unweighted GPA. Selective Colleges are well aware of the pattern of, say taking more APs or honors to just boost the GPA, so they unweight the GPAs and then will kind of apply their own scheme for weighting which is usually less than the high schools’. If your school overseas is just deemed as very rigorous in comparison to most even top U.S.high schools, then perhaps you will be cut slack.

*Do not comment on the strength of your essay. That is purely up to how the admissions readers see it. Write about yourself the best you can and let them decide. I am sure that anyone who hasn’t rushed their writing thinks it is fine, but we really just don’t know how it will compare to over 1000 (or thousands) applications.

What AP, IB, or A levels did you take? Is their any evidence of academic well-roundedness or passion in your profile outside of an interest in business in a somewhat generic sense. Have you started an actual business (one year, it was cited on the BBA admissions stats website that 25% of incoming GBS students had started some sort of business. And keep in mind many likely came to ECAS or Oxford with stronger GPAs and similar SATs, if converted to the new scale. This was like 4-5 years ago. In the past two years, the stats have creeped up some) or have done research in economics or a business related field. While Oxford is less selective than Emory, it emphasizes a more full academic immersion/liberal arts experience, and they really value applicants/students with higher than normal academic orientation and passion (and if this is obvious, it can maybe cause them to see potential past a weak statistic in a key area). Given the emphasis on this full immersion academic experience at Oxford, please make sure it is much more than an alternative to Emory main because you do not think you will be admitted to main. Make sure you want this type of experience or else there isn’t a legit reason to be there over some other places you are considering. There is no reason to suffer through a school for two years just to get to the one you like when you can be at one that fits well for all 4 years.

Either way, you have some shot at Oxford as it is less GPA sensitive than main campus (SATs are extremely similar from a statistical/educational standpoint), but please stop describing your stats. The UWGPA wouldn’t be good at all if not from a rigorous school, and at Oxford, I suspect the SAT would be above average, but neither campus over-emphasizes the SAT over subject based ability. Course selection, AP/IB/A-level performance, and other academic/co-curricular endeavors will be more of a deciding factor in the academic category. Your chance will not be the best, but I would not say it is remotely impossible. You could definitely be admitted.

Thx for the reply!
I take two AP courses and I calculated my UW Gpa, it’s around 3.53(two Ap courses)
My school’s grading standard is kind of rigorous and obviously can’t be changed like some other domestic high schools in my country…
Besides, I have chosen three Ap next year Calculus AB Statistics and macroeconomics.
I haven’t started a real company since it’s illegal in my country for a teenager
Yeh I know my Gpa is weak, but I’ve heard that some colleges only consider tenth and eleventh grade? Then W would be 3.72, UW would be 3.6. Don’t know if Emory counts as one of them?
Welcome for any suggestions

@Fulfilling
Well I would say a Low Reach simply because you’re GPA is a bit low, however Oxford’s admit rate is a but high like 35% so you still have a great shot. I hope you apply to both campuses it doesn’t cost any extra.

Forgot to say… The biz competition I myself launched was reported by two world-known TV media (local chunnel) and also contained my personal interview on it.
Furthermore, Nationality: Chinese. Studying in one of the international schools in Shanghai.
Ok with personal finance. (No demanding for aids)
Thx again.

Just realized my title… Chance not change! Junk input metho

@bernie12 When my son applied last year, admissions told us they remove all “non-academic” courses (band, PE, music, etc) and then compute an “Emory” unweighted GPA based on science, english, language, and math courses to get a better comparison of students. I, of course, don’t know if this is true, but this is what we were told…

@nightstalker160

Good!

I wasn’t sure, but that is what I figured. I just didn’t want to state a specific weight for AP/IB but it may be like a 0.5, which is lower th@nightstalker160

Just wanted to add that my son received a large brochure in the mail today from Emory, and according to the numbers given for this last admission cycle the admit rate for Oxford College was 29%. The test scores and GPAs listed were only slightly higher at Emory College.

@OriginalSmother : I am actually glad to hear from someone that either unit is sending out brochures.

And that sounds very believable. Usually the differences are particularly noticeable until you account for the matriculates. Even then, there honestly is usually not the most insane difference (like if Weighted GPA was posted, I am sure the GPAs would pretty much converge and or at least be so high that differences are meaningless for comparative purposes).

@OriginalSmother Did the new brochures have the new or “old” sat format on them. Meaning was it out of 1600 or 2400?

@VANDEMORY1342 It was the “redesigned” SAT.
Emory College- Reading/Writing 680-770 Math 670-740 ACT 31-34
Oxford College- Reading/Writing 660-730 Math 660-760 ACT 30-34

It also clearly stated in the fine print that these are the admitted numbers as of 4/17, and enrolled numbers would be available 9/17. It was a really nice magazine- selling the whole Emory University experience.

@OriginalSmother Thanks appreciate the info, glad you and your son enjoyed the pamphlet.

@OriginalSmother I know this has been posted other places, but this is an article about this year’s class… according to this article, the admissions rate for regular decision was 22%.

http://news.emory.edu/stories/2017/03/er_undergraduate_admission_applications_record_high/campus.html

@OriginalSmother : I have this odd feeling that Emory converted the redesigned SAT scores back to the old scores using the correspondence chart (that or numbers were for 2020 and they took the high end of the old and the low end of the new. I have seen this reporting method on some websites and it would nearly match the collegeboard numbers for 2020). Don’t know why, but they likely did. Those numbers are not consistent with what was in the article posted by @nightstalker160 .

I wonder if the 22% for RD was across both colleges or just Emory? 22% is consistent with the numbers given for Emory College in the pamphlet I’ve been referencing. (although it doesn’t break down the acceptances by early or regular decision)

Am I correct in understanding that the only merit aid given by either college is to their Scholars? (meaning not many students actually receive it) We are seeking merit, and I think the Emory will be too far of a reach. My son is not certain about what he wants to study, and so he was intrigued by the idea of getting a broad base at Oxford before moving onto the Atlanta campus.

@OriginalSmother My son starts at Oxford next week, he got very little academic money but a lot of money in need based grants from Emory. I know every student is different, but I’d apply and see what your son receives. It is always a tough decision… my son had a full academic ride at Sewanee and got $3K in academic money from Emory. As I said, there are also need based grants… so you have to really weigh the net cost with the academic reputation and make a decision on the best value in each situation.

@nightstalker160 A full ride at Sewanee- wow. That’s a school that I wanted my son to look at but couldn’t get him interested in it. Glad it worked out for your son at Oxford. We stopped by the campus earlier this summer because we were passing through on a road trip. The coziness of it was appealing- it really seems like a great way to get the best of both worlds- small LAC and larger university. We will be full pay everywhere, so we’ve been targeting schools that offer merit or aren’t too expensive to start. He has a nice list but the only downside is that there really isn’t a reach on it. He seems fine with that though, so I’m sure it will all work out.
