So I graduated with a degree in Human Development because I originally wanted to do pre-health and I’ve been having thoughts of wanting to do finance…Obviously I cannot erase my bachelor’s degree but I have been having thoughts of going another direction. I know that my parents will be unhappy if I have to get another degree in order to do business now. Advice?
First of all, you do not have to a get a job in your major. Second of all, you don’t need to do an entire new BA - you simply do a masters in finance. You may need to take a few extra courses, but that’s it.
However, I do recommend that your work is a related field, so that you get a better understanding for the actual work that you’d need to do. Starting in HR is a good place or in career counseling, both which you can do with a degree in Human Development. There are many other jobs that you could get which you could follow and move to finance.
There are several good MA programs for business (different than an MBA or a Masters of Finance). They are typically one yr degrees and cater to non business UGs. They are helpful in transitioning someone from the social sciences to direct placement in a business oriented job. You might want to consider those as an option.
