Hi all, I know this question has probably been asked tons of times but I just need some clarification. I'm applying this year and want to get into the Mathematics/Applied Sciences (non-impacted) major at UCLA but will not have all the prereqs done by next spring, specifically some of the upper division math courses. (My fault for being lazy and not taking math at all my first year because I originally wanted to go for Econ which only requires up to calc 2.)

Anyway, my plan is to apply for something completely different such as Geography so that I can guarantee my spot at UCLA first. Then I want to spend my first and possibly second quarter just finishing up my math requirements for the Math/A.S. major. Will I be able to apply to change my major after my second quarter? Is it OK to spend my first two quarters at UCLA not taking any of the upper-division courses for the major I got in as (Geography)?

I know this will delay my graduation, but I am completely prepared to spend an extra year at UCLA for the very reason of changing my major.

Sorry if this is all a little confusing. I would appreciate any help!

It’s almost impossible for changing majors not within the same dept at UCLA.

so here’s wut u can do, try to write a great personal statement, and start taking as much as math courses as possible. so you can still get a shot.

personally, imma a math/econ transfer student, I just missed one lower div class==> “discrete math” but still got accepted due to my great personal statement…

It’s not that hard if the major isn’t impacted. Just complete the pre-reqs and they will probably let you in. Math is easy to switch into, according to some friends.
