Changing Majors

Hi Everyone,
I transferred to UC Davis last quarter as an English Major (jr year) and have so far completed 12 additional units which gives me a total of 102. For winter 2011, I’m taking 15 more units (4 classes) of 2 electives and 2 required english classes.

With that being said, I’ve found that I’ve lost my interest in English and am hoping I can still switch majors. Does any one have an experience doing this? Is it difficult/possible?

If so, after reading the application, I notice it says that in order to apply for a major change, you need to have above a 2.0 GPA for the new major. So, lets say I want to get into mechanical engineering, does that mean my next quarter I go ahead and take those classes, THEN consult with the dean/adviser? Or do I consult with the dean/adviser NOW, then begin taking the classes?

I am also a transfer junior student and just change to engineering. You should consult the adviser in your new before you take the classes and as soon as possible. But it is pretty easy to change as long as
1)you have good gpa,
2)your unit at the quater that you apply to change is not over 135 quater unit,
3)and you have the minimum class requirement
but guess if you decide to change from english to engineering, because you need 21A,B,C calculus class to meet the minimum requirment (at least for my case), that is engough to boost you up above 135 unit if you have not started anything yet. So you should talk to the new advisor to see if you could meet the requirment on time

Second what chloet says. You should talk to an advisor about it. She can look at your record and see what classes you’ll need and also give you an idea if what you’re considering is possible/feasible.

You should know that the GPA they are looking for, say going from english to engineering, is the courses that are required for major change. So they count the GPA from your MAT21X classes and PHY9X and not your english major classes GPA.

It is also noted that it is much easier to change within your college. I may be wrong but English is in Letters and Sciences? So if you were to change into another major in Letters and Sciences then it would be much easier even from a GPA standpoint.

The first major change is pretty easy with no(to little) questions asked. But if you’d like to change again, it’s a little tougher so make your choice wisely when you do.
