My son is applying EA to 2 LACs and RD to 8 others ("just" 8 supplements to go!). Meanwhile, I can tell he is falling in love with one of the 8 (a mom's intuition). It's too late for ED I at that school, but if he wanted to go ED II, is it possible to do that? He's sent in a preliminary app. and the Common App., both saying RD. Would we just call the admissions office and ask them to change it? Or would this look bad? I haven't seen this addressed anywhere.

A friend of my daughter fell in love with a school after the ED deadline but before the RD one. She called and swooned and asked that she be changed to ED. They were happy to hear that she was so in love with them and did change her to ED. As it turned out she was deferred and then not accepted, but her "resume" wasn't strong and I hadn't thought she'd be admitted anyway. I'd say it's worth a call.

If it's before the EDII deadline it probably won't be a problem and I can't imagine that it would be taken as a negative. There might be some additional paperwork, like the GC form (most of the ED applications I have seen have a space where the GC agrees that the student is applying ED) -- and I assume that you would have to either send a letter or a signed acknowledgement of some sort.

It's certainly worth a phone call. But doublecheck the school's policy on applying ED there and also EA to other schools. If the school has EDII, I can't imagine they wouldn't let him change. Was the ED1 deadline on Nov. 15? If so, since that was only yesterday, I wonder if they would let him change his status. And of course, you'd have to get the high school to send all the material on time, too.

He hasn't decided yet; I just have a feeling he might and want to be prepared. The ED II deadline is Jan. 15, same as the RD deadline and the school has received everything except the supplement (because it hasn't been sent yet). I don't want to rush or push him, just be ready to advise him if needed. Thanks for responses!

Son applied RD to 7 schools and then fell hard for one of them after an overnight visit. A phone call to the school and a form from guidance was all that was needed to change from RD to EDII. He goes there now.

My daughter also changed her application from RD to EDII. All she needed to send was the ED form stated that she would attend if accepted; sorry I can't remember what the form is called.

Many students change applications from RD to EDII after they were denied admission to their EDI school. Several school have on their website how to change from RD to EDII.

bethie, My guess is that most colleges would welcome a change from RD to ED, especially in mid-November. I don't think it would look bad at all. I'm a supporter of ED for both the applicant and the school (finances permitting) but I do recognize that the advantages are greater on the college's side, so logically, the more ED apps they receive the better for them.

If he's convinced this is the one, he should contact the admissions office now and ask them to make the change. As Sly says, be sure to ask about their policy on applying EA to other schools simultaneously. And of course be prepared to send that supplement right away as well.

Good luck and let us know how he does.
