Chapman University Chances

I’m currently a Junior in the International Baccalaureate program. I was freshman cheer captain, sophomore class vice president, and this year I’m directing the spring musical, and I’m the stage manager and the head of dramaturgy. I’m in Teen Leadership Council, Project LEAD, and I have a 4.0 GPA. I’m also currently taking a online college course in film at Wesleyan University. I know they are looking for a creative resume, so I’m making film narrative in the upcoming weeks. Is that enough or what are the chances of me getting into the Dodge College Of Film and Media Arts? It has a 15% admission rate. Thank you!

You certainly seem to be headed in the right direction. How about your test scores – SAT/ACT?
Have you toured Chapman, or plan to?

@longrangeplan I have a tour already scheduled with Chapman. Would it be bad to seek out the admission counselor of Chapman’s summer program then?

Match!

Best of luck!

Dotsfrug beside good grades and SAT’s you need a great sample of your work. Dodge asks for a video essay and yours really has to stand out to get in. Chapman’s film program has become one of the hardest to get int, thanks in part to The Hollywood Reporter listing is as the 5th best film school in the world. I’d come it to odds of getting into an ivy.

@shacherry Thank you for replying! So do you think they might value creative mastery over academics? In other words, do you think my video essay will have more of an impact on my admission than my grades?

@Dotsfrug I think that you need both to be strong for Dodge. The film school is known to require the highest stats of any major for admittance. I would shoot for the top 75% gpa and sat or act test scores. You are a really well rounded involved student and Chapman really loves that. Can you see if you can meet with a professor or the department chair when you tour the school?

I’d say with a 4.0 and good IB scores, you’ll be well on track even for a competitive film school. The IB is a lot tougher than most AP classes, and if Chapman is one of the schools which treat it as such, that’ll definitely help.

You’ll need to score highly on the SAT or ACT, and send in a good sample of your film work, but at the moment you seem like a strong applicant. If you can get good standardized test scores, and submit a really good piece of work, I’d put your chances in the 35-40% range. The reason I’m not going higher isn’t that you aren’t a strong applicant, but simply because applications to the best schools for a particular field of study are always a roll of the dice.
