"cheap" hotels?

any suggestions? I'm going to honors weekend in april and they gave us a lengthy list of nice hotels...all over $100/night, which we can't afford (just getting there is already stressing out my parents).

This place is basic but decent and has great reviews on tripadvisor.com. It is very inexpensive:
<a href="http://www.bestguesthouse.com/%5B/url%5D">http://www.bestguesthouse.com/</a></p>

And another slightly nicer one for $99 a night:
<a href="http://www.dauphinehouse.com/accommodations.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.dauphinehouse.com/accommodations.html</a></p>

I'd recommend going on to tripadvisor.com, checking the B&B/Inn tab and putting in the <$100 criteria. You'll come up with several small places that have good reviews.

Also be sure to check the reviews for larger hotels that are cheaper. Some have really bad reviews, and look like places to be avoided. That site has never let me down yet.

Good luck!

Country Inn and Suites is super nice and we've stayed there twice since the storm for $99/night. Ask for a Tulane rate or whatever they're calling it these days. If you ask you can probably get that price. Also, ask for a room in the 400's. The rooms they brag about have super high ceilings with original beams. Pretty but noisy when the upstairs neighbors walk around.

Since the Iberville and the Ritz haven't been open or don't seem to have the Tulane rate anymore, it's the only place we consider.

I also concur the recommendation to check out tripadvisor.com. I use it frequently and find it to be very helpful and pretty darn reliable.

I actually just came back from a semi emergency trip to visit my son at Tulane and wanted a really cheap hotel that was reasonably close to the school....and found one for $71 per night on St Charles Avenue called the Avenue Garden. It's right next door to a restaurant called Voodoo barbecue. It looks more like a B&B but doesn't offer the breakfast. They give you a key to the front door of the building plus your room. On street parking.

I was a single woman travelling alone and wasn't sure about the place at first. I usually stay in the Hampton Inn St Charles (Tulane rate $119) which is a little closer to the school and seems to be in a bit nicer area.

Anyway, the room was smallish, but nice enough, I felt much safer than I expected, the pizza place next door called Slice (left of hotel) was great--nice little bar and bartender:) I think the rate is $79 on weekends. There's also a more upscale restuarant on the end of that block called Zea's which I've eaten at before---great food.

I have been to New Orleans many times, staying in the Iberville Suites, Place des Armes (GREAT location in the quarter), Hotel Monteleone, Country Inn & Suites, Marriots, Hyatts, etc. FOR VISITING TULANE, my favorite still is the Hampton Inn (free secured parking & breakfast). For visiting the Quarter, probably Place des Armes. However, in a financial pinch, I would stay in the Avenue Garden hotel again. With taxes, the total was $81. Definitely met my needs for this particular trip.

thanks for the suggestions!

Because we had our dogs, we had to stay further out. Got a Triple AAA rate at the laQuinta on Veterans and I-10 in Metairie. This laquinta is in a nicer location than the one on Causeway ("gentlemen's club" across parking lot on that one). It was really very pleasant and surprisingly quiet. Lots of places to eat nearby. Stayed off the freeway during rush hour but we were able to make Tulane in 15-20 minutes without a lot of problem and got to see a little more of the NO area. Internet a little slow but it did work, room was clean and comfy although not luxerious, shopping malls nearby, and a Cafe du Monde for Beignets just a mile away. Triple AAA rate is $98. Check internet for possible discount codes besides this for laquinta. Can sometimes get a better rate. The drive to Tulane really isn't so bad from areas out closer to the airport and you can find some internet coupons plus hotels more along the lines of Motel6. Also, if you sign up to stay in a dorm overnite, you will be on campus for early morning monday and your parents can come after rush hour traffic dies down.

One thing you need to consider, the motel taxes in NO area are murder! They'll raise your final cost about 20%.
