i dont know which chem professor to pick
the options are Johnson C, Kummel A, Kim J, Brydges, Stacey, Muller U
I tend to do independent study rather than going to lectures
but plz share some of the past experiences if you had any of the above professors
thx

Kummel’s lecturing and sense of humor are legendary. Exams straightforward and close to the book. My most memorable professor from UCSD. (You’ll want to go to lecture - it’s awesome)

Johnson’s all-around very good, nice person, used to have mandatory homework (dunno if that’s still the case), exams very close to Hoeger’s style in that they require a tad more thinking/analysis than other profs.

Judy Kim’s crazy brilliant smart. She tends to expects this of her students, which might be difficult for a general chemistry class. But she’s really nice!

Haven’t heard greatest things about Stacey Brydges, wasn’t very impressed with her lecturing style. No comment on Muller.

Aim for Kummel or Johnson if you can.

If Kummel is recommended, why he needs 3 hours for middterm?

I have Johnson for 6A and shes really clear. She tends to give extra credit for going to lectures once in a while with the clicker. As for homework, it wasnt from the book. There were suggested questions from it, but it wasnt required. Instead the homework is from an online program called ALEKs, which is really easy to get 100%. I dont know if its the same for 6b though (i heard her classes are full already)

@seniorsf

what’s wrong with that? you’re still held to the same standards as your classmates. a typical homework assignment for a chapter could take a few hours to complete. plus you don’t waste class time taking exams. and it shouldn’t take you the whole 3 hours to do anyway.

so muller is a no go?
kummel is basically full already.

not necessarily, lack of opinions doesn’t mean he’s a bad teacher. i assumed you already checked course reviews?

ok i was just wondering if the “no comment” was meant in a bad way. haha thanks.

but yeah, he seemed alright. i had listed him (muller) and brydges as my second choices (figured i wouldnt get johnson or kummel) depending on how their DI and LE fit with my other classes. the reviews seemed fine. muller=self study, brydges=self study, confusing LE, weirdly written tests
