Placement Tests

My orientation is at the end of July and I was just wondering how much (if any) preparation I should devote to the Chemistry and foreign language placement tests. I hate French and don't want to take it in uni--at all! It will undoubtedly lower my GPA. As for chemistry, I have a 5 in IB HL, and am in limbo about what to do. Should I use my credit to place out of intro chem, study hard and ace the placement test and move on or retake the class?

BTW, I am premed.

I bombed spanish, but wasn't expecting anything since I had 2 semesters of poor spanish instruction. As for chem, I hadn't had any since AP chem 1.5 years ago, didn't study at all, and placed into orgo. Didn't change anything since I have ap credit though.

french placement test is TERRIBLE. I took up to 4 honors and I bombed the test.. i didnt get any credit and i have to take 100 level class if im going to take another french class (i took french 1st three years, no AP senior year so i was rusty.. no studying either). Its really hard. Spanish i heard was easy. If your going to do premed, i would go ahead and skip chemistry. But of course, you must know your chemistry. If you forgot most your stuff, study before you come to michigan. As for the placement test, its not hard. 5 hours (of study) for chemistry, assuming you took ap, will probably place you out of chemistry. Its a lot of basics.

for reference, i probably studied total 10 hours for chemistry, took AP chem SOPHOMORE year got a 5, and i got 95th percentile on the placement.. So basically i had forgotten all my chemistry and relearned it in 10 hours, and hit the 95th percentile mark.

Your quite the brilliant person, j89. In my high school in Canada it is unheard of to do an AP science in grade 10. I did IB HL Chem in senior year and got a 5 (out of 7) ha! Makes me seem quite dumb. That's part of the reason I am hesitant to go into orgo first year. I got a 5 in AP Bio, in junior year. I don't know if I want to skip that even.

Alright, looks like French is going to be ******. I did IB SL French, and got a 4 lol! Thats the lowest passing grade, FYI! I'm going to have to study my ass off if I want to avoid doing French.

Would French 101 (or we the intro class is) be extremely difficult for someone who hasn't taken French since grade 11? I didn't even take the advanced French courses and I feel like I need to learn it from the beginning.

haha.. no. french 101 is going to be easy. Theres one class, i think what i was recommended french (103) *i think, which is a "brief overview of high school french, not sure what that means.

and you say "I got a 5 in AP Bio, in junior year." ... Im not smart. I got a 3 in AP bio my senior year so kudos to you. Im just good at chemistry.

like i said, if you study your chemistry a little, and get an overview of whats going on, you can try for organic. You can always switch out if its too difficult, but in my opinion, its going to be difficult anyways (your going to have to take it sooner or later) Organic Chemistry is not all chemistry. Its a lot of biology too, so i think you have as equal of chance of succeeding in organic as me. Just beware, its 8 hours per week. Lots of time, + studying too.

sorry to drag this on, but is 103 (i only brought up 101 because I thought it was the reg intro course) the usual intro class taken for students who want to learn french? If so how hard would that be considering my circumstance?

Organic Chemistry is quite easy....you'll be glad to take it! :)

ok, so i still have the recommendation sheet.

French 103 (Review of Elementary French) is a refresher course for students with some hs french, condenses work of first-year college french (101+102) into one term, prepares for second year college french 231. people placed into 103 are people who fail the placement but completed three or more years of hs french, or people who fail but have taken 2 yrs of french within the past year. I guess that means, if you fail the placement, but have taken french in hs, than your recommended for 103.

So French 103 is a consellation prize of sorts to those who have studied French, but did extremely poorly on the test?
Just Wondering, what did you get on the French placement test j89?

1st of all.. stop copying my name.

2ndly, I did really poorly on my french test. Around 25% right. and it was multiple choice so... im pretty dumb in french.
