Chem14A Textbook//For those out there taking Chem14A, where'd you buy your book?

So under my study list the book is:
Atkins
Pkg : Chem Princ (4th) (W/stdygde&sm/model Kit/std

And it's about $186. That's expensive :( Just wondering where did you guys buy your Chem14A book at. I can't seem to find a cheaper one on amazon.com or half.com or I'm just doing a wrong search? Help?

I bought it off Amazon marketplace about a month ago for $43. I'm sure they're more expensive now, though.

You're looking at the UCLA custom edition that includes only relevant chapters selected by your professor, along with the solutions manual and a model kit. This custom ed. can only be found at UCLA and Textbooks plus, some bookstore in westwood. Well you might be able to find it online if some UCLA student is selling it.

If you buy it from amazon and what not, you'll have to buy everything seperately.

i would recommend buying the UCLA custom edition for the following reasons:

1) Buying everything separately (and i would recommend getting AND using all the resources available) will be a pain AND will end up costing a significant fraction of the custom edition's cost.

2) Chem 14B will introduce some organic material that is NOT in the Atkins book. Thus, you will have to buy the custom edition next quarter (or find someone who has already taken it with lavelle which may or may not happen)

3) some people refuse to try using the model kit despite its enormous utility. USE THE MODEL KIT (you can bring it to all the exams/quizzes for ALL the chemistry classes)

I bought the "real" textbook for way less. For the two 14B chapters, I copied MrMoo's copy at the STC. Borrowed my roommates' modeling kits, who took 14A when I was taking 14B, so didn't need them during that quarter anyway.

And sold the textbook at a profit.

It was way cheap.

You should have other premed friends by the time you're taking 14B.

???????????

Profit!

Well I don't really have any "friends" taking Chem14A. I mean, I'm an incoming freshman...so yeah. I guess I don't really have a choice but to pay $186 for the book huh? :( Bummer.

The book has all the chapters you need for 14A. The 14B custom book has chapters not found in the Atkins book.

When you take 14B, buy the book you need from the UCLA store, make copies, then return it.

^problem is i don't think you can return once you have opened the plastic wrap

but in general, if you are exceptionally cheap then follow pink's advice. my personal opinion is that it seems like too much work (but then again im really lazy)

also, you should try to make friends in 14A and study in groups....it'll help

I think the UCLA custom is a better deal except two things:

resale value sucks b/c its limited to only ucla
paperback

However, the model kit itself is like a $40 value, and is GOLD if you actually use it.. not necessarily in 14a and 14b, but in ochem it makes a world of difference.
