has anyone tried taking this? when i press begin exam it keeps saying single sign on is not authorized and error or something.
i am an incoming freshman btw and im trying to take it through my application site and its not working...

it's not necessary that you take it if you have a good idea of which class you're going into. if you know your AP score, you're set. about 70% of freshmen start off in chem 6a, another 10% in chem 4 (this is for people who have had little to no chemistry in high school, and it was so sadly boring that i wanted to rip my hair out), another 10% in chem 6b (for people who got 4's on APs), and another 10% in chem 6ah (for people who want an insanely not-worth-it challenge, or get placed in because of their 4).

oh. so im guessing chem 4 is the most basic chem course. i think i should take that then since i didn't take ap chem and i rarely paid attention when i did take regular chem.

thnx for the info

So you don't have to take the placement exam to get into a chem class (I think I want 6a)? I took AP chem this year but I won't know my AP score for a bit.
Thanks.

if you took the AP chem exam this year, you should have a pretty good estimate of your score (assuming you had a decent teacher who gave you pre-tests and the like). from your estimate you can enroll yourself in a class of your picking, and if it needs to be changed come september, you can do that easily. (ie, i knew i had definitely passed the exam, but knew a 5 was beyond my limits -- so i guessed a 4, and a 4 i got!)

yeah, chem 4 is the most basic chem course ... but my god, it is BASIC. you'll be off-track for the remainder of your gchem series and will only get to pick from 2 classes, versus the 5 lectures/profs that your on-track friends have. my advice is if you remember ANYTHING from high school chem and are willing to work, just go into 6a. if it's too overwhelming for you, you can always switch back into chem 4 (it's not unheard of, we had some new people join our class a few weeks into the quarter). but it's near impossible to say "i'm bored, let me go to 6a" some three weeks in.

do you know what chem 6a would expect you to know before going in because i guess i would be willing to study some over summer by myself since it seems like chem 4 is a bad idea.

Okay, thanks, I'll just wait for my score. I'm pretty sure I got at least a 3 but you never know! I definitely don't want to be in chem 4.

W.H. Freeman: Chemistry

6a covers fundamentals + ch 1-5
6b covers ch 6-11
6c covers the rest, though 18/19 are included at the professor's discretion

additional notes

take johnson for 6a if possible (she is pure awesomeness.)

buy your book on amazon and NEVER at the bookstore if you can help it

don't ever bother with those "optional" study guides. they're at the library, but in my four years of TAing i never had a student who had enough time to go through those. if you want extra practice, ask the professor or TA -- their material will always be more relevant than some arbitrary textbook

-your friendly chem major/grad/TA

What about the people who didn't take AP chem in high school? Do I need to take the placement test to get into 6a?

i might as well post here

what chem class do you recommend for those who only took honors chem in high school and do not plan to major in any of the science fields?

@dollybee10: nope, just sign up for the class. i'm not even sure who takes the chem placement test anymore. but i took it for fun during my senior year and it only placed me into chem 6ah. figures.

@unknownpleasures: do your college GE requirements even require that you take a chem class at all? if so, keep reading: there's a "non-science" track of chemistry (chem 11, 12, 13) but after sitting in on one, i realized that it was like high school chem ... only slower. so if chem's not your thing and you have to take it anyway, you've found your class :)

u rule astrina!

If we plan to enroll in 6B rather than 6A, is it neccesary/ reccomended to take the Chemistry placement exam?

What about the foreign language placement exam? (for Muir college)

Thanks in advance

"plan to enroll" meaning what? you think 6b sounds more fun than 6a? or your AP score of a 4 automatically places you into chem 6b and you're asking the question because ...?

the placement exam is optional for everyone. any exam that is completed online without any hard proof of identification will never be used for the purposes of registration. suggesting potential classes for which to register is one thing, but scores on the test do not automatically translate into a class you have to take.

im going to muir too, but when i signed up for orientation it said that taking the chem and foreign language test was required to sign up for the course.

i took regular chem in sophomore year so i forgot a lot (but i got an A), and im worried if i take the exam that it'll put me in chem 4 and it'll screw up my major. so even if i do fail the exam i don't have to take the recommended course? i will study over summer to refresh myself. its just my major's planned schedule for freshman year has 6a-6b-6c sequence for freshman year and i dont want to fall behind.

again, from a previous post, the chem placement exam is for suggested courses only. they won't use it to assign you a class without your input -- if this was the case, you could pay me $20 and i'd take the test and get you placed into 6AH (the highest the test will suggest).

thanks so much astrina, i mean you're always helping everyone out here even though there's no benefit for you, that's really nice of you

i was kind of stressed out about the placement exams so its good to know for sure

haha i just took the chem placement test for fun. It's not that hard (although there are things on the exam that you probably forget), and I think there's no time limit. I decided to do All twenty or so problems in 5 minutes, and I only got a 64% (chem 6a). I probably would have gotten placed into Chem 6AH if I actually took a bit more time, but whatever, I'm definitely not planning to take Chem 6AH anyways.
