CHEMISTRY SAT 2 need Help/questions answered!

Hey guys, I'm currently a sophomore and was curious about signing up for the chemistry SAT 2 test. The signup deadline is 4 days from now so I need to make a decision quickly. I am in honors chemistry now and have received pretty high A's in the class. I got a 100% on the midterm but I haven't taken the final yet. The test is june 4 which is about 1 month away from today. Multiple chem teachers at my school offer after school chem sat 2 tutoring for free and practice tests. How hard is the test? What study methods would you guys recommend? Would it be possible to get a 700+ with a month of preparation as a student who is competent in chemistry? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

anybody???

this depends on a lot of factors like personal study habits, interest in chem, generally how well you do in school, etc. but generally, if you want to get above a 750 or are aiming for an 800, taking AP chem before is the best way to go. i just finished the ap chem course this week and took the test today, and it was generally ok. regular chemistry may not do for a 750 or above, but i guess that depends on your teacher and how thoroughly he/she taught you the material.

Will you take AP chem next year? I guess it’s possible to do well if you study a lot, but it would make your life so much easier if you take it with AP chem.

Originally I was signed up for AP chem next year (junior year) but I recently switched it to AP physics-mechanics, and senior year I figured I would take AP chem in addition to AP physics-E/M but isn’t it pointless to take SAT 2s senior year because by then you are already in college, right? I figure if I take this now I can take 1-2 more junior year and that’s all I need, if I do good on them. Any of you guys have any recommendations?

You might as well take it. You can always take it again if you do not like your score, and it will give you a good idea of how much you know already going into AP Chemistry.

If you are planning on self-studying, there aren’t really many calculations on the SAT II, basic stuff. In my opinion, Honors Chemistry is all you really need.

I took the SAT II today, and took the AP exam last week… it was the easiest thing I’ve ever taken in my life, and most if it was stuff covered in my Honors class, so you should be fine :)

cool thanks for the info! Btw, do you recommend studying with princeton review or barrons?

PR. I find that Barrons has a tendency to be filled with excess information you REALLY don’t need. PR is concise, and even if it doesn’t give you EVERYTHING that’s on the SAT II, if you are a reasonably bright person, which, I’m assuming you are if you are considering moving up to AP Chem after honors, it will be easy to reason stuff out on the test with what you know.

okay sounds good. Also, since I only have ~4 weeks of prep time, do you think I could realistically squeeze out a 700-750 if I study 20-30 min a day and do some after school sessions with my chem teacher?

For those who just took the May Chemistry test, which prep book is the best?

sure - but i’d just practice. practice practice practice. i didn’t really study for it, since i had already done all of my preparation with the AP exam

cool. thanks a ton for all the info

The Chem SAT II is a breeze if you know the material - no hard math or anything

I’d get the Princeton Review book and learn from there, but don’t let it get you overconfident, because the practice tests in PR run easy in comparison to the college board. If you can also get actual college board practice SAT II tests with the PR book, that would be ideal

yeah I just picked up the PR book. I’ll probably take the test in october

There’s a lot of balancing usually, a few laboratory questions, some acid-bases definitions etc. A lot of it is basic, so the best thing to do is get a lot of practice. I know some people who only took honors chem (not ap) and got 750+ so it’s definitely doable! good luck!

thanks mate!
