(Chicago)- Can't get a summer internship!

Hello CC,

I am a junior at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign majoring in Finance. I can't seem to find any internships that will accept me. I applied to Investment Banks, Insurance companies, Consulting Firms, etc... I know one of the key factors why I'm not getting a internship is because i have a 2.85 gpa which I'm hoping to bring it back up this semester. Any tips on landing a internship this summer with that gpa?

I would recommend you try and get an internship in another field and try really hard to get your gpa up before you apply for another internships. You may also want to try offering to volunteer for free at a boutique bank to get some experience. I’m sure you know that you are trying to enter one of the most competitive industries and you need to be very strategic if you are going to be successful. You are going to have to be twice as aggressive and persistent than your peers in order to land an internship but it can be done! Good luck!

I think should target unpaid internships at regional boutique, and then try to get your GPA up.

I think i had a phone screen interview with one of the companies in downtown on Tuesday. They asked a few questions and they said they were going to hand me off to a hiring manager. How long does that process take for them to contact me again for a second interview?

you could try some of the trading firms in chicago. will be tough with that gpa though, you may need to just lower your expectations.

I applied mostly to all the trading firms.

I say that it will be at least 5 days. Good luck though!
And don’t worry, you are not the only one who hasn’t landed an internship yet… sigh.

I think if i don’t get a internship eventually this summer I will become a teller at Chase…
