Now to look at something even further along than acceptance letters.

I'm thinking about applying for U of Chicago's Summer Intensive Language Course. The only issue is that the max number of students for each class is 18. As much I'd like to say I have a chance of getting in, my most recent grades, which is what the application asks for, would probably turn them off (Curse you, math midterms!). Is it very competitive to get in? I'd try regardless if it weren't for the fact that it costs $40 dollars just to send the papers in, which would have to come out of my own pocket. I need to be frugal now and need to know how many people try to get in, or else I could just be throwing my money into the wind.

No, you’d be applying for the Summer Programs in general, and they aren’t insanely competitive. Note that not many high school students take the language classes, when I was on campus, only 3 others did (I took French, another took Portuguese and two took Latin). Also, you shouldn’t have a problem with the 18 max either - my class had about 9, and since they probably aren’t high school students, you won’t be competing with them anyway. This isn’t college admissions, they just want to make sure you can handle the work. Good luck! Which language are you planning to take? PM me if you want more information on the logistics of the program.

Also, if you’re a graduating senior planning to attend U of C, you can’t take summer quarter classes there before freshman year (this was on the form from last year). I don’t know how it works if you are matriculating elsewhere in the fall.

It’s not terribly competitive to get in, as zakuropanda says. However, it will cost you quite a bit of money (and there’s no financial aid), so you should evaluate whether or not it is worth it, especially if you find $40 a significant amount.
