My question is mainly directed towards seniors, but anyone can feel free to answer. I'm currently a junior and I want to ask the seniors if there's anything they've regretted doing/not doing during their junior year and wished to go back in time and change. As a junior, I regret not joining many clubs I was interested in back when I was a freshman and I don't want more regrets this year. If some seniors on here can give some opinions and recommendations, that would be great. :)

Taking the SAT only once and never taking the ACT.

not taking the SAT, (though taking the ACT early and twice was one of the best decisions) not trying anything and everything I could sports wise, and not taking at least one easy class a year (it reduces the stress level so much, allowing you to focus and do better in other classes).

Procrastinating, not preparing for interviews, starting online AP classes and then not finishing them.
Most of my regrets are from earlier than junior year, though.

I don’t really have regrets from junior year. Most of mine are from sophomore year and earlier – junior year was stressful but it was also when I was the happiest.

I’m with @teenbodybuilder. I wish I’d retaken the SAT.

Yeah, most of my regrets are from before junior year, but some overlap. I regret taking so many Business and CTE classes (the Microsoft Office classes) because now I’m not even sure if I want to major in business and I didn’t really learn much in the CTE classes anyway. I should’ve taken some art classes instead. I regret not studying for the SAT. I bought the book but didn’t touch it until the night before… This happened all three times I took it lol ooops

Like @teenbodybuilder, I wish I could have taken the ACT. I did take the SAT twice, though, including once in March of junior year, something that I recommend.

I wish I took the SAT earlier – like in December of my Junior year, instead of June. Taking it for the first time in June meant neglecting the subject tests… I feel like if I took it earlier, I would have had more time to study, rather than just BSing it after AP exams. Like @quidditchcat said, other than the date I took the SAT, I don’t really regret a lot from Junior year. My regrets are from Sophomore and Freshman year – I was really, really happy Junior year.

As a junior, I currently regret not forming good study habits during my freshman year. I have midterms tomorrow, and I’m super screwed.

Not taking the ACT earlier. Not joining clubs also though that was mostly this year that I’ve done so. Not visiting colleges earlier.

Hi there!

I second the idea of taking an easy class each year. The people you’ll see in the easier classes are generally a lot more laid back, which can be a breath of fresh air after spending hours with hypercompetitive HYPSM drones, haha. Plus, you might discover something that interests you!

I’m glad I took the SAT early on in my junior year. It was the biggest pain in the butt ever to have to go to prep classes over the summer, but I took the actual exam in October and did fine on it, making it the first and last time I ever took the SAT. If you haven’t taken it yet, I’d recommend signing up for the next one, even if it’s just to see how you’ll do.

Also, don’t worry about what others think. I remember first coming to my HS as a freshman and just being wonderfully bewildered at how /weird/ some people were. There were the kids who belted out opera songs during lunch, the kids who painted their faces so that they would glow under black lights, the kids who drew diagrams of what to do in the event of a zombie apocalypse. Of course, most of my classmates were relatively normal in comparison, but just the fact that there were people out there who were so utterly unafraid to be themselves was really awesome to me. I guess what I’m trying to say is, put yourself out there. After all, it’ll be your last year of high school! Climb a mountain. Learn a new language. Ask that guy/girl you like out. Get out of your comfort zone, basically–my high school career is slowly coming to a close and I’m realizing that I have around four months to do everything I haven’t gotten a chance to. I know it sounds trite, but I do think there’s a grain of truth hidden somewhere in that heap of platitudes.

Best of luck! You’re almost there. It won’t be long until you wrap up this semester and move on to bigger things. Like the Common App, for example

I wish I would have taken more honors classes my freshman and sophomore year. I also wish that I would have been more involved with EC’s.

I don’t really have any pressing academic regrets. I do wish that I pushed myself a bit harder freshman and sophomore, because I know that if I cared those years, I would be either valedictorian or salutatorian instead of 5th or 6th like I am now. I also wish I knew just how competitive the elite schools are, so I could have many done a really unique thing or some research. Most of my regrets are of the social variety.
